    Numerology - HarperCollins UK

    ORIGINS AND PHILOSOPHY

Most western numerologists trace their methods of practice back to Pythagoras, the Greek philosopher who developed his own ‘Pythagorean system’ of numerology in the 6thC BC.

His system was based on the numbers 1 to 9, and he called the number 10 a ‘special number’, because it contains all the other numbers, 1 to 9, within its vibration. The vibration of a number is all the concepts that are related to it, whether they be negative or positive.

Pythagoras was a great teacher who was able to link together the inner world of consciousness and the outer world of form through the interpretation of the numbers 1 to 9. He founded the ancient ‘School of Mysteries’, where he taught students to develop their intuition and their minds by practising numerology; he was also a brilliant mathematician.

He used the wisdom of numbers to awaken people to a deeper awareness of themselves, and of others. This process made him what is known as an initiate. Some people believe that he visited Egypt (among other countries), a land which holds the incredible mystery of the pyramids.

However, numerology has been used since the beginning of time. Evidence of numerology exists within every major culture around the world, but the early Chinese, Hindu and Tibetan peoples were probably among the first to use it. Each culture has its own system, but whichever method is used, core similarities emerge. There is one line of basic truth that is recognised by all systems, and that is the focus of this book.

    Systems from around the world

Numerological systems have been found all over the world. These are some of those systems.

    AFRICA: DIVINATION

Divination – or prediction – is one use for numerology. It is based on a combination of using the numbers 1 to 9 and of ‘signs’ from nature. Where forces outside these two come into play numerology may seem to fail, but as a rule divination is accurate when using numerology.

    CENTRAL AMERICA: MAYAN NUMEROLOGY

The Mayan numerological system is based on many methods; the numbers 1 to 4, 1 to 13 Tones, and the 20 Sacred Signs, all of which are associated with different directions in life. The ancient Mayans devised a calendar for world events based on divination; they also held strong esoteric beliefs.

    GREECE: PYTHAGOREAN NUMEROLOGY

Pythagoras developed a practical system of numerology using 1 to 9 (see p. 14). His system was based on dates of birth and names.

    ISRAEL: GEMATRIA

Gematria is a section of the cabbala, which is an ancient book of wisdom, and is based on a system whereby the phonetic sounds of letters in names are translated into numbers. Great significance is placed upon the power of names, which are believed to carry information both from the individual’s past life and on their potential for the future.

    TIBET: ESOTERIC NUMEROLOGY

Esoteric teachers, or teachers of that which is hidden in everyday life, such as Djwal Khul and El Morya, were among the last two centuries’ greatest teachers of this system. It stems from a deep understanding of the concepts and ideas behind each number. It is based on the numbers 1 to 9 taken from the date of an individual’s birth, and was mainly used for spiritual development and for the benefit of spiritual leaders. Ancient Tibetan scripts still survive which give details of numbers that connect people to their inner wisdom and potential in life.

    Philosophy

The way each civilisation and society has interpreted numbers has been different, according to collective levels of awareness at that point in history. As a culture’s perspective shifts and changes, so a new understanding of life is gained via these nine numbers. Wisdom gathered from this process can then be applied accordingly.

Numerology holds that every time a person looks at a number, the subconscious absorbs that number’s wisdom, and a little more truth is extracted from the database of information that is contained within human beings. Learning qualities which relate to each number guides people towards wisdom, but the mind acts as the catalyst. By revealing their simple truths, numbers can help individuals to know themselves better.

    COLLECTIVE DATES

A Collective Date is one which influences the whole world as opposed to an individual. According to numerology these are potent dates because they have the ability to guide humanity (the world having a collective agenda and being able to learn lessons).

Every person will react to a given situation in a different way, so an individual’s response to a Collective Date will be unique, but every individual will be affected by that Collective Date. In this sense Collective Dates are the most significant dates of all in numerology.

    WORKING OUT YOUR NUMBERS

There are four major numbers to consult in a numerology chart.

    They are:

    •  Personality Number

    •  Life Path Number

    • Wisdom Number

    •  Personal Year Number

Each of these numbers will have a different bearing on your life.

When you read about some of the qualities of the numbers in your chart, some will resonate with you and others will not. This is because the latter qualities have not been developed in you as yet but rather are contained within that number’s potential, and other qualities have yet to be explored as your life unfolds.

Working out a numerology chart is easy if you remember these guidelines.

    •  Always write your date of birth and your individual names and letters clearly

    •  Always add up each of the numbers until you arrive at a single digit between 1 and 9

    •  Remember to relax and enjoy the process: it’s fun

    THE PERSONALITY NUMBER

This relates to your psychological patterns of behaviour, and the practical way you go about life. It is the ‘me’ aspect of your chart.

The Personality Number is calculated by adding up the numbers contained within the day of the month you were born.

Here’s how to calculate your Personality Number if you were born on the 30th of the month:

    30=3+0=3

    Your Personality Number is 3.

If you were born on the 28th or 29th another stage of calculation is required. For example:

    Step 1: 2 + 9 = 11

    Step 2: 1 + 1=2

    Your Personality Number is 2.

    THE LIFE PATH NUMBER

This number relates to your bigger purpose in life, or the direction you need to follow, rather than the one you want to follow.

The Life Path Number is calculated by adding up the numbers in your day, month and year of birth.

Here’s how to calculate your Life Path Number if you were born on 3 December 1971:

    3 (day) +

    1 + 2 (month)

    + 1+9 + 7 + 1 (year) = 24

    2 + 4 = 6

Your Life Path Number is 6.

    THE WISDOM NUMBER

This number relates to gifts accumulated from the past, whether in this or past lives.

It is calculated by adding up all the letters of the full names on your birth certificate, or the full names by which you were first known, using the Alphabet Chart (see below).

Here’s how Marina Anne Cox would calculate her Wisdom Number:

    M A R I N A A N N E C O X

    4 1 9 9 5 1 1 5 5 5 3 6 6

    = 60 6 + 0 = 6

    Marina’s Wisdom Number is 6.

    THE PERSONAL YEAR NUMBER

This number relates to potential major lessons or situations you might experience
