    Chapter One: Introduction

    Bastard Out of Carolina by Dorothy Allison was first published in 1992. It was the first published novel by the author.

    It is a semi-autobiographical novel. The story is set in the author’s hometown of Greenville, South Carolina.

    Ruth Anne Bone Boatwright is the narrator of the story. The story revolves around the central character and narrator, Bone, beginning with a conflict between Bone and Glen, her mother’s husband.

    Bastard Out of Carolina was made into a Hollywood movie. The movie was first released in 1996.

    When the book was published first, it received wide public acclaim. It was admired by both readers and critics. The book made to the list of National Book Award and bestseller.

    The author’s deep observations and minute study of the effects of class, gender, and sexuality on a poor family in the American South were highly admired.

    The story presents the time period between 1950s and 1960s in South Carolina. Though the subject of the book is quite complex, the author has succeed in describing the social problems through her simple stories and emotional honesty.

    Chapter Two: Plot Summary

    As the novel opens, Bone, the central character of the novel, describes her birth. She describes that her mother, Anney, was only fifteen year old when she gave birth to Bone. Her mother had been seriously injured in a car accident before giving birth to Bone.

    Bone describes that her mother was comatose during the delivery. She could not lie about being married. Her mother’s older sister, Ruth, and her mother were also present at the time of delivery. They tried to give a false name but they did not succeed because their deception was caught. Since the name of the husband could not be provided, Bone was declared an illegitimate child.

    For the following two years, her mother tried to get a new birth certificate for Bone without the word ‘illegitimate’ stamped on it but she failed. She hated
