101 Amazing Pirate Facts - Children's History Press
Introduction
Pirates have been around almost as long as there have been ships at sea. While this book mainly talks about the Golden Age
of piracy, piracy has been around significantly thousands of years longer than that.
The first recorded acts of piracy occurred in the Mediterranean in the 14th century BC, and was quite common during the era of the Greek and Roman empires, in fact Julius Caesar himself was captured and held as prisoner by pirates from Cilicia (part of modern day Turkey).
The Vikings (in addition to being explorers and settlers) were considered by many to be gangs of Scandinavian pirates. The Vikings looted and pillaged much of coastal areas of England and northern Europe. Viking raids were a hazard of medieval life from 790 to around 1066AD.
In addition to Europe, pirates could be found throughout history in China and the north African coast.
Piracy continues to this day, with pirates operating off the coast of Somalia as well as the Strait of Malacca near the island of Sumatra. Worldwide losses to modern piracy are estimated to be around 13 to 16 billion dollars a year.
