About this ebook

This is a study of Genesis 4:16 and the story of how Cain left the presence of the Lord to dwell in the land of Nod. In many ways it is also the story of the temptation we all feel as we live in the shadows of Eden today.

While a somewhat obscure verse in the Old Testament, Genesis 4:16 contains some very important truths about God's purpose for our lives and the temptation to wander from that purposes. It is also a call of God to learn to live in the purpose for which we were created. This is a simple commentary on Genesis 4:16. Its goal is to reveal the truth of this simple verse and its application in our spiritual walk today.

    Preface

This is a simple study of Genesis 4:16. When the Lord first put a burden on my heart to write on this passage I wasn’t sure what I could find in it. As I took the time to reflect however, the Lord showed me its richness and application to my life.

In many ways Cain’s story in Genesis 4:16 is our story. It is the story of a man’s rebellion and his wandering from God’s presence. As we watch Cain leave the presence of God we become aware of our own temptations to wander from the fullness of God’s blessings. We recognize just how much we, too, struggle with the attractions of this world and our own sinful heart.

This passage, however, is more than the story of Cain’s rebellion. It is a revelation of the heart of God for His people in general. We were created to live in Eden. While sin has stripped us of the privilege of experiencing the fullness of the Garden, the Lord Jesus Christ has restored this privilege through His death and resurrection on our behalf. The blessings and privileges of Eden are again available to all who will receive the forgiveness offered through the Lord Jesus.

Will we open our hearts to experience afresh what God intended for us from the beginning of time? Will we enter the presence of God again and learn to delight in Him and in the reality of who He is? I trust that this brief study will enable each reader to examine his or her life afresh. My prayer is that it would stimulate us to seek to live again in the presence of God, in the place of His fullest blessing.

May God bless you as you embark on this study.
