Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji used to wear two swords called ‘Miri’ and ‘Piri’. The first sword was the symbol of military power and the second symbolized spiritual power. The Sikh then became ‘Saint-Soldier.’

Chapter One: Introduction

Shri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was born on 19th of June, 1595, at village Guru Ki Wadali, now in District Amritsar.

Boy Hargobind was a very handsome child; he was the only son of Guru Arjan Sahib Ji and Mata Ganga Ji.

Guru Hargobind Sahib had five sons and one daughter. His five sons were Baba Gurditta Ji, Suraj Mal Ji, Ani Rai Ji, Atal Rai Ji, and Teg Bahadur Ji. His daughter was named Bibi Viro Ji.

The Two Swords of Miri (Sovereignity) & Piri (Sainthood)

Except for Teg Bahadur, all other sons passed away during his lifetime. Teg Bahadur Ji was made the Ninth Guru of the Sikhs in 1664.
