Chapter 1: Summary of The Corner Stone of Brain disease
In his recent book, Grain Brain: The Surprising Truth About Wheat, Carbs and Sugars Your Brain's Silent Killers,
Florida neurologist David Perlmutter opens his treatise by covering some familiar ground. Using an analogy that will automatically make some readers think of the so-called Paleo Diet, Perlmutter posits modern humans going back in time, trying to explain the food version of the current land of plenty to our cave-dwelling ancestors, who had to scramble to eat simply to survive.
While the images are stark but somewhat familiar, Perlmutter quickly progresses to one of his central premises, which is that the same over-consumption of glucose that leads to diabetes may also trigger Alzheimer's, which the author actually refers to as Type 3 diabetes.
According to Permutter's explanation, the mechanisms behind the two diseases are basically identical -- the same insulin resistance that causes diabetes also leads to the formation of plaque in the brain, the same kind of plaque that is responsible for much of modern heart disease.
From there, Perlmutter moves on to describe how inflammation occurs in the brain and how it relates to brain function. Criticizing the so-called balanced diet that combines protein,
