    Debbie Lamedman is the author and editor of eight acting books published by Smith & Kraus, Inc.  Debbie's play "phat girls" is featured in the anthology New Playwrights: Best Plays of 2003 and has been produced numerous times across the country. Her play "Mind Control" was one of forty finalists in the 35th annual Samuel French Off-Off Broadway short play festival. Debbie's commissioned work, written specifically for teens, includes "Ignorance is Bliss: a Global Warning", "Everyday People", a play about the effects of bullying, and "Rx." Other produced plays include "Triangle Logic", "Eating in the Dark", and "Out with the Old". Debbie was co-bookwriter for the musical "How the Nurse Feels", which had staged readings at both the ASCAP/Disney Workshop in Los Angeles and New World Stages in New York City.       Introduction

      I thought I had come up with a really great idea when I first decided to edit this book. If teen-aged actors were having such trouble finding material, then how great would it be to have a book that teenagers had written for themselves.

      For over a year, I have been gathering monologue material from teenagers and I have read over 500 submissions. Some of the contributors are actors, others aspiring something-or-others, but they all have one thing in common: the teen experience. The pieces in this book run the gamut from comedic to dramatic, fantasy to reality, surreal to science fiction. They are all unique, original, and teen-written with the writers ranging in age from thirteen to nineteen years old.

      Actors, I have divided the book into four sections: Female Monologues/Comedy, Female Monologues/Drama, Male Monologues/Comedy, and Male Monologues/Drama. Many of these monologues are not gender-specific, so I encourage you to read them all in order to find the one that’s just right for you. I have also included the author’s name and age along with the city or school that he or she is from.

      My hope is that together we have provided student actors with yet another resource that will challenge the acting skills of their peer group, at the same time providing material that all teens can relate to. So, enjoy! And go forth and act!

      COMEDY

      CELL PHONES

      (She starts the monologue talking on a cell phone.) Hi! Oh my gosh! I hate cell phones so much. I normally don’t say hate, I just say dislike, but I truly hate them! It is so annoying when you’re at a restaurant and there is that one person who is talking on their phone, and they’re talking so loud it’s like they’re yelling. It’s like … hello! Not everybody here wants to know about your IRS reports or whatever! What really gets me are those jerks at the movie theaters who never turn their phones off … assuming they won’t ring, but of course they do. Especially when those people are talking on their phone during the previews. I mean, yeah, it’s the previews, but they are just so inconsiderate. I love watching the previews, that’s just as fun as watching the movie. What jerks people can be. And did you know that like 78 percent of all driving accidents are caused by cell phones? OK, well I just made that up, but it could be true. Yeah, next to a DUI, it’s cell phones that cause the accidents. And the people who have phones talk about the most pointless things. Have you ever heard those girls who think they’re hot stuff and they’re talking all loud hoping everyone around them will hear them and think that they’re cool because they have a cell phone? Oh, big whoop … (Beat.) Oh, what? Hello? You’re cutting out. (Yelling.) Can you hear me? (Beat.) No? OK, well that’s all I wanted to say anyway. I’ll talk to you later! Bye! (Hangs up the cell phone.)

      AN ENCOUNTER

      JANIE: (Recognizing an accomplished filmmaker that she admires.) Oh … my … God! You are like my idol! Seriously! You do like the three things I want to do when I grow up. Really. You write … you direct … you even act, which is like… I like to do that also. I mean, I like all the behind-the-scenes stuff, but I want people to see me! I don’t want to sound arrogant, but ya know … it’s true.

      And I guess it’s like I could imagine myself being you, but, of course, female because you’re a male, and a Jew, and a Democrat … huh.

      Hey, is it strange to say you’re attractive? It’s just a lot of people look at me weird when I say that. But, I don’t know … it’s just I love your movies … most of the ones from the 70s and early 80s and … it seems like I can always relate to them, ya know? Like personally, religiously, and even sexually, I mean … it’s just that they’re … they’re great, and I’m probably freaking you out right now, but you probably get this all the time … but still … it’s something really neat for me to say. (Laughs.) Neat.

      Uh … I’m gonna go now.

      NICOLE: Oh my God! (She takes a deep breath.) Are you? … are you? … Oh my gosh … I can’t breathe; I think I’m hyper-ventilating! (She takes multiple deep breaths.)

      I never thought that I … I mean, me … I mean you and me … I mean you and I would be standing in the same room … at … at … at … at the same time! Now! Here! Oh my God! I don’t know what to say! It’s you! In the flesh! For real! It’s a pleasure to meet you!

      Oh … how could I forget to introduce myself? How rude. (Holds out hand to shake.)

      I’m Nicole … it’s nice to meet you. No, it’s an honor to meet you! God, there are so many things I have always wanted to say to you, but I can’t remember a thing. (Pause.)

      Can I touch you? Feel you? Cause I can’t breathe. (She reaches out to touch his hand.)

      Oh man … I just touched you … it’s you!

      I have everything you have ever done … movies, books, pictures … You name it, I have it.

      You are my idol, a God really … and I’m here talking to you … I can’t believe this. I am … well … I’m your number-one fan! (Pause.) Wait a minute … you’re not … hey … it’s not you. I mean … you’re not who I thought you were. You’re not famous … but … I thought … Wow … I could have sworn you were that other guy. You really look just like him. You must get that all the time, huh? Oh well … It was nice meeting you—whoever you are … (Shrugs and exits happily.)

      THE GUY IS A JERK

      You’re never gonna believe this. This guy that I really, really like told me that he really, really liked me too! And for like a week everything was going great. But then I went on vacation and the whole time I was on vacation I was super-excited because I’m thinking, Yeah … this guy likes me!

      But what I didn’t know was that while I was gone, this guy starts liking my best friend Sarah and then he starts liking my best friend Lisa, and then he starts liking my best friend Ashley. And not only has he liked each one of them, he’s turned all of them down at the same time. And then when I got back from vacation, he winds up turning me down too. He said he wasn’t feelin’ it—damn hormones. So me and Sarah and Lisa and Ashley are sitting there crying together because this guy turned out to be such a jerk! Like, who does that? Who can do that? He changes his mind every day and we just can’t take it anymore. So now it turns out he’s having this thing with this other girl, Jessica, and we’re all like … whatever … do your own thing, who cares anymore. But for a few days, this guy just completely shattered everything in all of our lives because that’s what guys do to girls. But we’re kind of getting over it now, and me and Sarah and Lisa and Ashley wound up making a pact against him. And ya know? We’re throwing a party! So do you want to come? But whatever you do … don’t bring Ryan!

      OPERATION MYSTERY MAN

      Wow … amazing … Who would ever think that my teacher would introduce me to the love of my life, my one and only someone! I owe her everything … everything! I mean, wow! She really knows quality. Thank goodness for that! I mean this guy is everything I’ve ever dreamed of. He has everything! He has blue eyes … ah … beautiful … just thinking about them make me light-headed. Oh … and his hair. It’s an amazing shade of blonde! It’s just the way I like it! But really, his personality is what makes him so great. He’s the sweetest guy I’ve ever met! This guy is nice, funny, smart … well I could go on forever, baby! One problem. I have no classes with him! How am I ever going to see him? Well, I thought I had it all planned out when he asked for my number, but you see it’s already been a month and no call! It’s time for a plan. I can’t keep living like this. We do have the same teacher, just different periods … how about I leave something in the class? Like a book or something and then I come back to get it … then I can get it during his class. Fabulous! The mission shall be called Operation Mystery Man!
