Foreword
My first experience with a Ragamuffin cat was a phone call from an elderly neighbor. She issued an excited invitation for me to come meet her new baby cat.
Since I never turn down a chance to play with a kitten, I went over immediately, but I have to admit I had my reservations about the wisdom of the adoption.
Mrs. James was in her early 80s, some 40 years my senior, and even at the time, I found a new kitten a joyous presence, but an exhausting one! Baby cats can be absolute little hellions with their boundless energy, endless curiosity, and unrealistic sense of their own size in relation to the world.
Kittens can and do get into all kinds of trouble because they tend to come up with one bright idea after another. I had visions of Mrs. James in a crumpled heap on the floor with a bright-eyed kitten wondering what new game
they were about to play.
When my neighbor introduced me to the baby she christened Rachel, I admiringly picked up the little ball of fur and asked, Is she a Ragdoll?
This led to a well-recited history of how Ragamuffin cats differ from Ragdolls and have even nicer dispositions. It truly was like listening to a new parent tell you why her baby was the cutest ever born.
Within a week, Rachel was lying peacefully beside Mrs. James in the afternoon when her programs
were on. The young cat never tried to wind herself around Mrs. James’ ankles. In fact, she stayed well out of the way, but trotted right along behind her new human.
When the great-grandchildren came for a visit, Rachel stayed right in the room, happily chasing catnip toys and playing with the youngsters. She exhibited no fear of strangers, and was even friendly when one of Mrs. James’ friends brought her Shih Tzu over for a visit.
I privately wondered if there was something wrong with the cat! Then I began to read about Ragamuffins. Rachel was right on track for her breed, and only grew more loving and understanding of her elderly human as she matured into a full-grown and truly beautiful adult cat.
About five years into the relationship Mrs. James asked me if I would agree to take Rachel in the event of her death or ill health and I agreed. Sadly, I had to meet this responsibility about three years later.
The first night Rachel moved in with my two Russian Blues and me, I was shocked at her equanimity with the situation. Of course, I brought all of the things with which she was familiar including one of Mrs. James’ sweaters on which the devoted cat had been sleeping while her human was in the hospital.
It remained her favorite bed for years, but Rachel became a part of our household much more quickly than I dared to hope. My boys hissed a bit in the beginning, which she tolerated patiently until their egos settled down. She sat with me, as she had with Mrs. James, but she also romped with my cats and was more vigorous and active than she had been when she had to worry about tripping her elderly friend.
This adaptability and the intuition to sense what is appropriate behavior in any situation is one of the strongest selling
points of the Ragamuffin breed. I swear these cats are almost telepathic. There is a great deal of truth to the assertion that life with a Ragamuffin is addictive. They are quite exceptional cats, and unusually intelligent.
I can truthfully say that of the many cat breeds I admire and with whom I have shared my home, the Ragamuffin is one of the best companions. I can and do whole-heartedly recommend this breed, and I can promise you that if you decide to welcome one into your family, you won’t be disappointed!
Acknowledgments
I would like to thank and dedicate this book to all my friends over the years that have helped me find wonderful homes for abandoned and mistreated cats or those whose owners could no longer look after their pet.
To my wonderful husband Nick, thank you again for all your help and assistance and for undertaking the dreaded proof reading. His observations and comments are as always invaluable and without his encouragement I don’t think I’d have ever started this enjoyable journey.
Just a note to say that I have written this book using American spelling as that is what I’m used to. I have given measurements in both feet and inches/pounds and ounces and
