About this ebook
In Cole Calmenson's Teacher's Pets, Kate and Lucie are best friends who love, love, love DOGS. But just because they can't have dogs of their own doesn't mean they can't MAGICALLY turn into them!
The FURRY ADVENTURES continue in this CHARMING series when Kate and Lucie find a substitute teacher in their class. Mr. Z makes goofy jokes and has the class going hog wild as he teaches about animal communication. At the same time, mean Darleen makes fun of Kate and Lucie's friendship. Luckily, once Kate and Lucie slap HIGH FIVES and say the special words, they turn into dogs and find a way to save the day. They even make a new friend in the process!

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Kate and Lucie are next-door neighbors, best friends, and share a powerful secret -- when they wear their magical dog-bone necklaces and high five each other, they turn into talking dogs! In this sequel, the girls deal with a mean girl at school, have a substitute give them an assignment about animal communication, and learn that their mothers are going on a double date with two men they have never met before. While the second book in a series, this title stands alone surprisingly well. It recaps the major players and plot points from the previous book without being overly summarizing. For those who really enjoyed the first book, this is sure to please as it has all the same characters plus some new ones. The adventures the girls get into as dogs are more like playful hijinks with no real danger feared. There are attempts at diversity here with Lucie presumably being Latina, although that is only subtly gleaned through naming conventions and illustrations. It is also explicitly stated that both girls have single mothers, but the mothers are referred to as "Mrs." and their last name, which seemed odd to me if they were either single always or through divorce (i.e., "Miss" or "Ms." would be more appropriate in either case). There is a plotline with a bully that is easily resolved as the bully simply feeling left out; perhaps this is overly simplistic for the real world, but sometimes it's nice for the problems in a children's book to feel small in scale. This wasn't my world's favorite title, but my 10-year-old niece, who is more likely the target audience, was so excited that I got this second book in the series for her. After listening raptly, she said she really enjoyed it.
