- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5In this book, there are 38 different poems over the struggles kids face in elementary school. These poems stuck out to me spoke to me, and really spoke to the kids in the poems. They did a really good job with the poems, and the pictures were very clear and I enjoyed looking at them. I liked how this book focused on the different struggles and situations students are faced with while attending school. After reading these poems, I would hope that the students learned how to be prepared and get things done on time. This would be a lesson I would teach my students in my classroom, and tell them how important it is to get things done and not wait until the last minute to work on something that they've know about all semester.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5If You're Not Here, Please Raise Your Hand is a cute poetry book that covers a multitude of relatable topics for students and teachers. Teachers can use the poems in this book to inspire students to write their own poems about their school experience. These poems can also show students that they are not alone in the experiences they are facing.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Children love hearing of trials and tribulations that they face at school but always in the context of it happening to omeone else. This is a collection of poems is all about school and the problems that kids go through during the school years. This book would be entertaining not only for your begining readers but also for older readers too. The younger kids can sit and listen as the older ones can curl up and read it on their own.We could utilize this book in an number of ways. We could use it as a read aloud lesson with a group discussion, using this opportunity to talk about things that happen to all of us at some point and time. We could also incorporate this into an English lesson and use it as a guide in having the students write their own poetry using their own experiences as a focal point.

The Wind Is Calling Me Away
How can I sit through one more day,
For the wind is calling me away,
And I want to change with the leaves that fall,
But I’m here in school and I’m missing it all.
While leaves as bright as the sun fly by,
We add, subtract, and multiply,
And none of these numbers makes sense to me,
When the sky is as blue as the summer sea.
Oh, teacher, please let’s race the leaves,
Let’s jump in piles and climb the trees,
Let’s add, subtract, and multiply,
The wind, the leaves, and the deep blue sky.
I Brought a Worm
Jane brought a baseball bat
And a ball for sharing time.
But I brought a worm!
Rich brought a goldfish bowl
Without a goldfish.
But I brought a worm!
Lizzy brought an egg with a yolk
And an egg without a yolk.
But I brought a worm!
Joe brought an eraser shaped like a knife
And an olive sandwich.
But I brought a worm!
Jane showed us how to hit
The ball with the bat.
Rich put the class turtle
In the goldfish bowl.
Lizzy showed us how to prick an egg
And take the yolk out.
Joe tried to cut his sandwich
With his eraser knife.
But I ate the worm!
Right there in front of everyone
I ate the worm!
