Terry Laughlin
Terry Laughlin was a competitive swimmer in college and went on to coach college swim teams for 20 years. While watching his teams grind out lap after endless lap, he realized that a few people were "natural" swimmers while others struggled through a workout. Hoping to teach this "natural" ability, Laughlin left college coaching in 1988 to teach swim technique to adult swimmers. Laughlin went on to become the director of Total Immersion Adult Swim Camps and Clubs, which are held all over the world. His revolutionary swimming program is used by professional athletes and recreational swimmers alike. He passed away at age 66 after a battle with prostate cancer.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Some of the explanations could have been clearer, but this method works amazingly well. When I used it, I actually managed to go faster than some of the others swimmers, which is something I consider to be an amazing achievement. No more slow lane for me - it's medium speed lane all the way!!
I think that talented swimmers who used this book would also find a lot of useful information. The authors have a lot of good ideas about applying hydrodynamic and learning principles to the field of swimming, so I can't help but think this book would benefit almost everybody who was learning to swim, and hadn't been taught about either of these things. A very good (of occasionally turgid and confusing) book, overall. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5best book on swimming as it teaches the fundamental principles of moving in liquid.

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It's very useful for learning drills to improve your swimming technique and to get inspired to swim for fitness to satisfy your own level, pace, and enjoyment.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This book is an ample description of the front crawl stroke (could be a bit longer) together with plea for a greater focus on technique and a lesser focus on endurance training in swimming (could be shorter). The book is written in an informal style. In the technical part, the focus is on a few key aspects that the author considers essential for a good front crawl stroke. It is well explained why these key aspects are considered important. A set of progressive drills is recommended to implement these key aspects. The description of the drills is sometimes a bit unclear, especially since pictures are scarce (you shall buy the associated DVD). Also, the transition from the drills to the complete stroke is quite vague; in particular the book does not contain a detailed description of a complete stroke cycle. The "plea-for-less-exhaustive-training" part contains a few interesting observations, e.g., a comparison of swimming and tennis training. While I like the recommended drills and the unconventional/fresh approach of the author, I also think the book is at times presumptuous since it overstates the value of the drills.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This method is absolutely great. The "swimming like a fish" (it's not literal quote, I've got and read this book in Polish.) is a brilliant idea and it works. I'm doing this stuff and it helped me a lot. Saying this, I must also state that this book is chaotic, seems to hide a lot for the reader. making him to do a lot of detective work... How? To me giving a ton of details and exercises, when I much more need PRINCIPLES, is just this. To say the truth I never much bothered with those exercises, I re-created some of them based on the principles. Which, as I said, I was forced to elucidate for myself. Bottom up, so to say. This method really deserves a much better book! Still, if you have no other way to learn Total Immersion Swimming - read this book and do the necessary detective work! (And some splashing about in some water too.) This method really is revolutionary.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I am very frustrated with the book; I've been practicing the Drills for several weeks now. I find the exercises very hard to do, it's a struggle to complete a lane (sometimes I give up and walk to the end, because I have been staring at the same tile for a minute) and I am very frustrathed with the TI way of swimming. For me, the drills and exercises just don't come together into a stroke I can swim.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Total Immersion has made a dramatic impact on how I swim. The concepts, and drills were clear and easy to work through without even needing to see it done in person. All the questions I had about swimming from stretching and hydration to distances and form were all answered.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent book with clear instructions on drills to do to improve stroke.
