About this ebook
HIS NAME IS DANTE.
Dark. Talented. Beautiful. Star of the rock band Inferno. Rumored owner of the hot New Orleans nightspot Club Hell. Born of the Blood, then broken by an evil beyond imagination.
HIS PAST IS A MYSTERY.
F.B.I. Special Agent Heather Wallace has been tracking a sadistic serial murderer known as the Cross Country Killer, and the trail has led her to New Orleans, Club Hell, and Dante. But the dangerously attractive musician not only resists her investigation, he claims to be "nightkind": in other words, a vampire. Digging into his past for answers reveals little. A juvenile record a mile long. No social security number. No known birth date. In and out of foster homes for most of his life before being taken in by a man named Lucien DeNoir, who appears to guard mysteries of his own.
HIS FUTURE IS CHAOS.
What Heather does know about Dante is that something links him to the killer -- and she's pretty sure that link makes him the CCK's next target. Heather must unravel the truth about this sensual, complicated, vulnerable young man -- who, she begins to believe, may indeed be a vampire -- in order to finally bring a killer to justice. But Dante's past holds a shocking, dangerous secret, and once it is revealed not even Heather will be able to protect him from his destiny....

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Definitely more convoluted than BLACK DUST MAMBO, this book was also very action focused. The circumstances of Dante's childhood are heartbreaking, and his future is anything but certain, however, I am definitely excited to continue following Heather's part of the story.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5This is one of those rare books I just couldn't finish; I got about halfway through and gave up. As a result, I'll keep the review short.
The whole book seemed to be about adoring, worshiping, idolizing, whatnot, Dante Prejean. Dante is a sexy, rock-star vampire which ought to be pretty cool, but he's also fragile, weak, self-destructive, and childish. He seemed like a little boy to me, always needing to be coddled and taken care of, and I didn't like him.
Because I didn't understand the worship of Dante, none of the other characters made sense to me - because their lives seem to revolve around idolizing Dante and making sure he gets all the cossetting he needs. The protagonist, FBI Special Agent Heather Wallace, was brought into the fold while I read...she goes from tough investigator to passionate defender of man-child Dante.
I just lost interest. A reader either has to fall in love with Dante or put the book aside, there's nothing else in it. - Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It took me a bit to get into this book but after I did, it was very good. Perhaps a little too much going on which is why it got 3 stars instead of 4. I could relate to Heather and thought the world created for nightkind and the Fallen was intriguing. The characters were complex and even the supporting characters were interesting. I have already started book 2 of the series and am looking forward to reading more about Dante, Lucien, et al.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I really wanted to like this book. All the elements were interesting and I liked the main characters very much...until I lost track of them in the maze of story elements that were thrown up. There were too many good ideas in this book. Not to mention that about roughly half-way through it turned into a romance novel and then back to as supernatural thriller in quite a choppy manner. I would have preferred it if it stuck to being one or the other.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A Rush of Wings by Adrian Phoenix. I loved this book. Great characters and storyline. A little bit of everything, vampires, angels, serial killers, FBI agents, Rock N Roll, what more could you want. Everything mixes together to make a really good story. You did good Adrian.Started it on Thursday but had to stop for a migraine. Felt better Friday afternoon so finished it at 11:00 that night and had to start the next book. I knew there was a reason I didn't start this book until I had all three books.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Really enjoyed this book. A little bit of hot and steamy, with crime, drama, vampires, fallen angels. Very interesting twists and turns. I enjoyed the characters names and enjoyed the relationship between Dante and Heather that came about as the story progressed. Even some action. Good read looking forward to reading the next installment in this series
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Book 1 of The Maker's SongI bought this book.Heather Wallace is an FBI profiler working in the field(??) on a serial killer case (all alone, loose-cannon like). In New Orleans the killer leaves its latest victim on the doorstep of Club Hell (a goth/punk club located at street number 666) with a message in blood that seems directly aimed at Club Hell's popular (in an underground/punk/sexual deviant way) lead attraction, the (mysterious, tortured, and possibly a vampire) Dante PreJean (seriously). Heather can't help falling for the mysterious (and seemingly sickly, but oh so sexy) PreJean and decides to go against the local cops (as in disagree with them) to prove his innocence and keep him from falling prey to the brutal serial killer.A Rush is Wings is heavily cliched, overly-dramatic and so gothic I'm surprised it wasn't printed on black paper with red words. As a mystery/police procedural it makes my head hurt. Heather is not a field agent, but she's operating alone, ignoring things like evidence and jurisdiction and common sense. She doesn't hesitate to give rides to PreJean, who is the primary suspect in the murder cases she's apparently investigating. She also hangs out at his house and drinks with him while the local cops are trying to finger him as the serial killer (and of course, eventually she sleeps with him). She has such dangerously poor control of her weapon that she doesn't notice when the magazine is stolen from the gun (which is in her purse). Meanwhile the mysterious man they find outside a crime scene, a reporter who somehow always has pictures of the crime scenes before the cops ever get there and is actively trying to make the cops out to be fools (and who, of course is the killer, and no this isn't a spoiler because it's revealed all of 100 pages into this nearly 500 page book) is dismissed outright and escapes to create more havoc. These are only the biggest (and they are pretty big) mistakes in only the first third of the book. However, A Rush of Wings comes in at an even three stars because there is something almost hypnotic about Phoenix's writing style and despite how many times I was thrown out of the book to engage in eye rolling or assessments on WTF it was easy to keep reading (and I could almost forget about the mistakes for a little bit until another one happened). It reads like some of the better Ann Rice or Poppy Z. Brite fan fiction, that is not original, but containing a familiar charm. I really don't recommend it, but I have no doubt that there is an audience just salivating for books like these (with a dark, sexy, rock-god vampire hero, a pretty, strong, determined heroine, gothic intrigue and serial killers).
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Two things attracted me to this book. Firstly the cover, it's pretty great. Sadly the cover is very misleading. Our girl Heather doesn't dress like this anywhere in the story. Nor is there mention of a tattoo on her arm.I know Authors don't have much say in the cover art but, I always find it sad when the covers don't match the story or characters at least a little. And the second thing that drew me to this book is that it takes place in New Orleans. I have never been there myself, so I love reading books that take place there. This is an Urban Fantasy novel, no denying it. It's dark & action filled and bloody at times. This was a good read.I really enjoyed reading the two main characters, Dante & Heather. They are what stood out for me. Dante is every bit the mysterious vampire and Heather the non-believer right up until she sees proof. This is a must read for any fan of Urban Fantasy.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5A Rush of Wings is the first group read pick for Book Bloggers Anonymous. An online reading group started by Steph at Paper Cut Reviews.I was a little wary at first because it seemed like something out of my comfort zone. A FBI agent, a psychotic serial killer and a mysterious guy who also claims to be a vampire? Not usually something I’d pick up at the bookstore. But the great thing about being part of a book club is that you get pulled out of your comfort zone sometimes because other people are making your reading choices for you and that way you discover books you normally wouldn’t look twice at!It’s been a while since I’ve read a third person narrative and it took me a while to get used to it at first. I don’t have a preference for either, though I am fond of first person, as I like to follow the story at the pace of the lead character sometimes, learning as they do.But I wouldn’t let this stop you from picking up this book! I really enjoyed the way Phoenix laid out the plot line, letting us see all angles of the story through the narratives of the main characters.I’m still on the fence in my opinion of Dante; I can’t put my finger on it. I did warm up to him as a character by the end, but I still can’t make my mind up. I’m looking forward to reading more about his history and learning more about his unique ‘talents’. Plus it was refreshing not to read about a vampire who is centuries old.Heather I loved; there are not enough strong independent women in PN and UF books. Too many of them drop everything at the feet of their newfound loves. Heather’s ability to stay true to herself and her principles made me respect her all the more.Final Thoughts…I do feel there’s a lot to explore, – Lucien for example, I’d love to know his story. I’d also like to see more of the vampire’s world explored more. Plus I’d like to find out more about Heather’s background (maybe I should just write a wish list?)During the opening chapters I did feel a little lost. Like something had happened that I’d missed. Though this feeling quickly disappeared as I read on. I can imagine some people would find this a little off putting. There’s also a glossary at the end of the book that maybe, could have done justice at being placed at the start of the book. Even though I’m Welsh and can speak a handful of Welsh words (the language some of the names are based on) I butchered the pronunciation and the glossary would have been a help.In the bigger scale of things these are minor factors and by no means take anything away from the book. It’s an interesting premise and I can’t wait to see more of this world explored in the next book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5What I Loved: (in no particular order) Heather- she is one of the best non-paranormal heroins I have read in a long time. The fact that she not only holds her own against the para's in the book but never once gets over shadowed is a testament to how well written she was. Lucien- I wanted more about him but he was my second favorite character. He was strong yet vulnerable and even though he coulda/shoulda/woulda said something earlier than he did, I think that just boils down to trying to do the right thing. E- HATED him but that was what I was supposed to do. He truly was the creepiest creep I have read in a long time. What I Liked: Even though most of the characters were extraordinary, they were all very "ordinary". They dealt with issues as they came, made good and bad decisions, and stayed true to who they were. Dante was a character I liked but not loved. I definitely felt for him and the things he had to go through in life. He was an excellent character to follow though because most of the time he was as out of the loop as the reader. What was So-So: I have to say I never warmed up to the third person storytelling but I don't hold that against the author as that is just a personal reading preference. Why I gave it a 4: It was truly enjoyable to read! The fact that I probably would not have picked it up if not for a book club made it that much sweeter of a surprise for me. If you are a UF then you need to read this book.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed this book very much. I was alittle worried at the beginning that it was going to be more of a romance book than a paranormal urban fantasy book. As it turned out it was much more of a serial killer hunting book along the lines of james patterson. It was a very welcome surprise and I can't wait to read the next one.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5I could not get into this book. I didn't like the heroine or the hero. I didn't think they were interesting characters and I didn't find their situation believable. I didn't even think they were in love, it just seemed like the went from acquaintances who were pleasant to each other to falling into bed for no reason. I was bored with this book the entire way though and I couldn't wait for it to end.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The various story threads all fell apart for me at the end. It felt like the author was too ambitious for his/her talent, with too much reliance on italicized snips of old dialogue to convey his character's emotions. Meh.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I really, really enjoyed this book. Infact, I intend to write more later but I just had to get these thoughts down right away. This book was much more than I expected it to be. I anticipated another human-cop-follows-a-lead-that-drags-her-into-the-paranormal-underworld romance. What I got was a very complex, dark, intelligent novel about morality and the depths of the inhuman soul. It was utterly fantastic. Plus! What a bonus that it was so frickin' sexy, too. That Dante... the whole time I was reading, I pictured a gothed-out Gambit. Yum.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I had quite a bit of trouble at the beginning of this book. Although, I have to say that the author had me page turning by the end of the book. Lucien character is unlike and character that I have encountered in my book before. Dante is my typical handsome man, but I found myself still able to understand the connection between characters in this book. I was let down by the ending, and now wondering there are more books in the series. I can not accept that it would just end so abruptly.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5This is one book that doesn't seem to know what it wants to be when it grow up. Fiction? Paranormal Fiction? Horror? I'd put my money on horror although I found it in the Romance department of my local B & N. Nope, there is no traditional HEA...not even a non-traditional, unless the author can pull a sequel out of thin air and try to fix/twist the ending. I was asked at Books & Chat what this book was about and could I describe it and this is some of what I said - "I've read about 100 or so pages (I have since then finished it) and I'm not too sure but I think it's set sometime in the near future...she doesn't say, but I get that feeling. It's a Police Procedural/Vampire/Fallen Angel/Serial Killer/Mad Scientist story, and there is supposed to be a ton of steaminess. So far... not so much, (and don't keep your fingers crossed for it either )but that's OK 'cause the story has dragged me in kicking and screaming.Uhm...don't take the Police Procedural part too seriously though, because it seems that the good FBI lady detective will soon be doing the mattress mambo with the Vampire/Possible Serial Killer/Possible Victim. I really don't think good little cops do that sort of thing, do you?*grin*It's set in New Orleans during Mardi Gras (at least up to the point I'm reading) and has a ton of French and also what appears to be a language of the authors imagination. I could be wrong though and it could be some ancient Incan language.*shrug*"I have since finished this book and have to agree with what I'm hearing on the street - the first third is great, the middle third just points out that author Phoenix seems to not like women very much, since she turns a veteren FBI agent into a TSTL girly-girl. the last third is so filled with blood guts and gore (and I really mean this literally - one scene has the 'Angel" ripping a vamp apart at his waist while in flight) .Save your money if you think it's going to be a lght fluffy paranormal read . If you are looking for a new voice in horror, then run out and grab a copy, I think she (Phoenix) will be doing better with her characters as she writes her second book.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Although the bones of the story was a bit like most other paranormal romances the details were different enough to keep me interested. Not a bad holiday read.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I didn't expect to like it but I love it. A great in depth story that lures you in and the holds you enthralled. Artfully written with characters who live beyond the page. I highly recommend this for anyone who enjoys a good tale xx
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I'm squeamish. This book has a lot of non-consensual sexual sadism. Not a good combination.I did skim-read to the end, mostly because I wanted to know more about Heather's backstory and how someone so young was a FBI special agent with several years of experience leading a serial killer investigation. At the end, I kind of have to come to the conclusion that that's just another detail that the author didn't really care about. The other primary detail problem I had... well, let's just say that anytime anyone referred to science, scientists or secret government science facilities I mentally put those terms in quote marks. You know, the vampire Joanna was a "scientist." Le sigh. I like science; it bothers me when people are mean to it.Anyway, I think this series is not for me.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I'm a bit tired of French vampires, can't we have Italian or Russian ones?, but I liked Dante and he was certainly a tortured enough hero. I liked the world building and the spin on the Elohim and Yahweh. And I really liked Dante, brutally trained to be psychotic, and struggling to be decent. Heather, the FBI agent tracking down the CCK serial killer, who crosses paths with Dante, was also a bit deeper and more interesting than most heroines. All in all a satisfying book, with lots of twists and turns (though Heather flying all on her lonesome to the mad woman's work place was a bi t like the heroine going alone into the basement, but it all worked out ok in the end...) and I immediately looked for the sequel. A bit of sex/romance but the thriller/world building aspect was given more time and attention.
