Introduction
I’ve worked very hard to become a successful dentist, build a great practice, and open multiple offices. I dabbled in real estate, and I love making lucrative business deals. I spent time working on building a great marriage, raising strong and confident children, and being a loving mother and friend. We have a beautiful home and all the luxuries that come with success, but there was one area of my life that was being neglected. It was my weight. I was overweight and not very healthy.
Fitness, or creating a healthy lifestyle, hadn’t been a priority in my life. I weighed 265 pounds and felt fine. My husband loved me regardless, and my children saw me as a great mommy, but there was something missing. There was something that I was avoiding, something that I had become comfortable sweeping under the rug by not addressing the elephant in the room that everyone could see but wouldn’t discuss.
The problem was that the elephant was me. I had achieved success in my personal and business life, reached goals that had always driven me, but I was falling short in the area of health and fitness. It wasn’t until a few years ago when I was asked to be on an upcoming reality show that I was really confronted with my reality. One day on the set, I was having a conversation with one of the other ladies that would be on the show. After having a great conversation about the show, I stepped away but was still able to hear my friend’s reply to another woman who had asked who I was. Oh, that’s my full-figured friend Heavenly.
I couldn’t believe it! My stomach felt like it was falling. I was done! Is that who I’d become? Was I Full-Figured Friend? This hit me like a ton of bricks. That was the last person I wanted to be, and now my eyes were open: I felt exposed, almost like the proverbial emperor and his new clothes, or his lack thereof.
I had struggled with weight as a young child, but after getting to high school, I lost it all and enjoyed my high school years being slim and trim. I know exactly when things began to shift. You see, I have three children and each time I got pregnant, along with the pregnancy came 75 pounds of weight. After each birth, I never really lost all the weight. Indeed, all
may be a gross understatement, as I only lost a few a few pounds from the additional 75 pounds I gained each of the three times I was pregnant. It doesn’t take a mathematician to figure it out that I had gained a lot of weight.
I carried this weight for years, and now here it was coming to smack me dead in the face. I had tried all sorts of diets, workout plans, and even surgery, but had no luck. Now I had to confront the reality that I had become a phrase I had avoided for many years – but maybe that was a part of my denial. I was fat and not happy about it. Everything else that I wasn’t happy about in my life I changed or eliminated. I always made sure I was in control, but this was one area where I had fallen short, and now, being confronted with being a Full-Figured Friend, a picture that I didn’t like was being exposed.
I went home and began looking at photos of myself, and it was like I was seeing myself through a different lens. I wondered, why hadn’t anyone told me I was overweight? But the reality was my family loved me just the way I was; I loved myself too, but knew I could do better. For my entire life, when I set a goal for myself, I was always determined to hit it and would not stop pursuing that goal until I did just that ... hit it. So now it was time for a new goal. It was time to attack this weight. It was time for a lifestyle change. I didn’t want to be Full-Figured Friend any longer. So now it was time to do something about it. I was determined to change.
Once you find your why,
which serves as your motivation (mine was I wanted to be here to see my children), you must determine what you are willing to give up to accomplish your why.
When you find the why,
you will be willing to walk through fire to achieve your goals.
I began to think about all the principles that had helped me succeed in business. I began to think that some of the same principles would apply, like hard work, determination, having a plan, being committed, and many others (including what I like to call prescriptions). If I applied them to my goal of changing my lifestyle and losing all the weight, I was confident they would work for me just as well as they had in business.
I feel that if I can lose weight and begin living a healthy and fit lifestyle, anyone can. This book is my journey to create a new me and the prescriptions I followed to get there.
I’ve been able to lose the weight and keep it off by first believing I could, which required me to change my mindset. The second thing I had to do was work at it, and it did take work. I won’t lie to you. So if you thought it would be easy, it’s not; but it’s a simple formula that if followed can bring you the success you desire.
I’ve learned lessons along the journey, one of which is to control my thoughts so they don’t control me and in turn make me do things that aren’t good for my body.
You only get one body, so I decided that I wanted to take better care of the one I’d been given.
I’m now ready to help you overcome the hurdles that may line your path to success. I hope it inspires you to create a healthy lifestyle, switch and become the you, which you desire to be.
I don’t claim to be a nutritionist, but I do understand health and have made it my mission to understand what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle and not be considered obese by today’s standards. I continue to learn daily, but do believe that by sharing what I have learned and what works for me, I can help you.
Since I lost almost 100 pounds, people often ask me, How did you do it?
They also want to know how they can do it. They want me to diagnose their situation and provide a prescription to help them reach their desired goal. Sometimes it’s not just about the weight,
