    May 2016: The Beginning

    Dublin Ireland

At least the weather was warm with patches of bright sunlight cutting through the cumulus clouds as he drove along the Merrion road through the evening traffic to his home in Sandycove Co Dublin. His radio tuned in to a world news bulletin.

Professor Douglas Manning a professor from the European institute on Human Brain research, a Nobel Prize winner in 2011. He was born in London 1955, a man of medium height, dark hair greying slightly. He was chief professor of neuro research at Trinity College.

The news was very depressing things were not getting any better. His thoughts were wandering on the general world situation as he drove.

The depression had got a lot worse with unemployment in most countries still rising. The Mediterranean areas were very unstable with civil wars occurring in these Middle Eastern countries. Israel was in a state of emergency over the Iranian declaration that they had completed a nuclear underground test. India and Pakistan with nuclear armed forces were facing each other on their borders. The Americans had withdrawn from Afghanistan leaving the country’s government at war with Al Qaeda forces who were gaining control of large areas from the Taliban government. The Arab spring was occurring throughout the Middle East.

The national debt in the USA had reached over fifteen trillion dollars and rising.

Greece had left the Euro states and was running their own currency again. The result was chaos and extreme poverty throughout the country. A civil war was brewing there.

The population of the world had reached seven billion, nearly double since 1930.

Oil production was falling due to lack of enough new fields being found, with China absorbing a greater total of supplies as it expanded its industrial production which was now almost equal to the USA.

At home unemployment had now reached twenty five percent. There were protest marches nearly every week in the city and a few times he had to divert getting to the college because of rioting in the city centre. The riot police had resorted to using water canons to try and quell the mobs. The government was talking of fuel rationing as the shortage of oil was beginning to bite and the price rising to unacceptable levels for the economy. I will just have to make a decision to go ahead with my private research project. Things are getting too unstable for comfort.

    Dublin May 2016

John Forbes sat in his apartment in Dublin’s Ballsbridge area. A typical bachelors pad, but comfortable. He was relaxing after a days work and watching the general news on the television, and a glass of wine. His thoughts were contemplating the problems facing the world at this time. He is a Quantum Physics Engineer with a private research company into micro engineering technology. What on earth is happening in the world today, he thought. In the last hundred years the world has been through two world wars and still none of our leaders seems to have learnt from them. Einstein was right when he said… Two things are infinite, (The universe and Human stupidity). We are destroying our world by sucking its resources from the ground to feed our hungry mouths in ever greater numbers. Something is going to have to change or we stand the chance of destroying our civilisation altogether."

He then began to think of his girlfriend Joan Cary; they had been going together for almost eighteen months. John 30 born in London, an only son. His parents had gone to live in Devonshire. Joan 28 born in Dublin, her parents lived in Ballsbridge. He was very much in love with her. They met every couple of days and dined in some of Dublin’s best restaurants. John drove a sports MG and Joan a BMW saloon. She had an apartment in Monkstown South Dublin. They were quite well off with their respective jobs. Joan was working in a neurological specialist hospital, a fully qualified consultant. He wondered if they had a child what sort of life it could look forward to in the present circumstances.

His mobile rang Hello Is that Mr John Forbes speaking

My name is Douglas Manning professor of Neuro biology and Psychology research Trinity College. I have got your name from some of your work colleagues; they gave me a very good report on your abilities working with your company.

Sounds good, said John nice to talk to you. How can I be of help?

I am holding a meeting with some friends and would like to invite you and your girlfriend Miss Cary along to join us. It is a get together to discuss a subject on neuro and computer science. I think it might be of great interest to you both. I am holding the meeting at the library in TCD in one of the meeting rooms. Would you be interested?

Sounds fascinating said John, I would have to ask Joan what she would think.

Ok the meeting is 7pm next Friday room six. I hope you will come, ring me back as soon as you can and thanks for talking to me.

John sat back in the chair thinking, that was out of the blue I wonder what it’s all about?

He phoned Joan who was doing some studies on a paper she was to present to her colleagues. Hi darling; guess what?

    Don’t know, said Joan laughing."

Just got a call from a Professor Douglas Manning, wants us to meet with him and some colleagues next Friday at TCD to discuss neuro and computer science. What do you think?

I have heard of him, quite a famous Neuro biologist I believe. I think we should feel flattered to talk with him. Let’s go if you want to.

Ok darling pick you up tomorrow Friday at 6pm. sleep well.

John arrived at six on Friday to Joan’s apartment in Co Dublin. It was mid May, warm, still plenty of daylight, the trees along the avenue in full bloom. What a lovely evening, thought John. He was dressed in a lightweight suit for the occasion. Joan opened the door. She was dressed in a Pleated skirt and sleeveless top. She had raven black hair and brown eyes, about 5ft.10, medium build and curvaceous. You look perfect," said John. He kissed her holding her close, she responded and they stood together embraced for some time.

This meeting we have been invited to by Professor Douglas, what do you think Joan?

Sounds quite interesting, I wonder why they have asked us along.

Maybe just to pick our brains on our latest research. said John.

    Trinity College Dublin.

    May 2016

They entered the main gates into the college. Trinity has one of the largest libraries in the world, a copy of most books published throughout the world. It contains over three million volumes on every subject one can imagine. It’s most prized volume the book of Kells.

The College was established in 1592.

The meeting place was to be in the one of the meeting rooms off the library.

When they entered at the time given to them, there were three people seated around a large rectangle table two men and one woman.

Douglas Manning introduced himself to them both.

This is Alan Dufrane professor of computer language programming of the Intel Corporation stationed here in Dublin. And this is Ms Elizabeth Bentine from California.

John and Joan shook hands with them.

I have gathered you here today, experts in your own fields of research, to discuss a very important breakthrough in the field of neurological research and computer updates. First of all I am sure you have all heard that in this very college a new way of storing data on a memory chip has been developed, it has made an increase in storage of astounding proportions. A new filament layer material of great strength but thinner than a human hair, it is called (Graphene). It is possible to stack many layers of memory onto one millimetre of thickness. On the implications for this breakthrough I would ask our Intel computer programmer expert, Alan Dufrane to explain.

Alan Dufrane an American professor of computer language programming of the Intel Corporation, stood to speak. He was a good bit younger than Douglas at 55 and balding on top. He was married with two children, a boy and a girl, twelve and fifteen years old.

I have known Douglas Manning for some years, we have become close friends. As Douglas has explained this new filament material has opened up to us in the computer memory design industry a great potential increase in memory storage. At present Primary storage in a form of Magnetic or Core memory and Thin film memory are the normal methods. The system that is of interest to us here is the (Thin film memory) relating to this filament breakthrough..Our research with this material has allowed us to store Petabytes of memory on a very small computer chip. One petabyte is approximately 1,126 Billion bytes. This amount of bytes is almost unheard of in present micro storage systems. I will let Douglas explain more.

John looked across at Joan, wondering if she was thinking as he was. What would this have to do with them? Her eyes were on the rest of the gathering ‘waiting’.

Douglas Manning stood again to speak. "This amount of storage would allow us to copy every book in this library 250 times over, allowing two megabytes per book.

As you know my business is ‘neurological and psychological research.’ It is reckoned the human brain has 85 billion neurons acting to control all body and memory functions at any one time.

This in itself is a vast amount; but the new chips will allow us to copy this amount.

My reason today in calling you all here is to explore the possibilities of communicating this computer memory storage to the Human brain as a direct access, rather than the present memory retention within the human brain. You must all realise what this could mean if this were possible.

All of you can be considered experts in you own field of research that is why I have asked you to come. I have invited Ms Elizabeth Bentine for a different reason. Elizabeth is a retail stores magnate with branches throughout the world selling everything from food to household goods. We have been friends for some years since I first went to the US back in 2010. She is considered to be one of the ten richest people in the world today with stores in most civilised countries She is very interested in Human progress and understanding. She has written books and articles on the subject of human behaviour. I will now ask her to speak."

Elizabeth rose. A woman in her 50s tall and slim, immaculacy dressed in a relaxed business suit. Blue eyes and blond hair, she had inherited a small business in California from her father now deceased, and built up her empire from there. She was married for a while but it did not work out and ended in divorce. She has a penthouse apartment overlooking the river Liffey in Dublin. One of others throughout the world.

"My deepest thanks to Douglas for inviting me here. He gave me a brief outline of what was to be discussed and I became extremely interested. This is a subject next to my heart. I have thought deeply on how I can contribute to this research. The one thing I have as you know is access to finance; I am prepared to invest in this project to get it up and running. Most of you are employed by governments or private research companies running their own agenda’s; to which you have to comply.

I am prepared to finance research laboratory facilities for you here around this table if we can form an outline of procedure for future research."

The rest of the group took a while to absorb this information. Alan turned to Elizabeth. That sounds like a very generous offer to me. It would be a very exciting prospect.

John turned to Joan. Imagine if we had our own research lab. She could tell from the look of excitement on John’s face just what he was thinking.

Joan took John’s hand. Can you believe this? You would be able to advance your present research without interference.

I have plans to complete a working model of my Cold Fusion reactor, said John.

Douglas continued. I have invited John and Joan here today because I feel we will need young minds on this project.. We have picked the two of you ‘A’ for your present qualifications in neurological research and quantum mechanics, and ‘B’ for your youth We hope you will join us!"

John rose to speak. "To all of you here, I think I speak for Joan as well as myself.

We would love to be involved in this type of project, and thank you for your confidence in us. We are both holding down jobs at this time, but would consider a change to be involved in such a fascinating subject. The obvious implications of this work would entail experimenting with the Human Brain functions. Can you fill us in a bit more Douglas?"

Well… said Douglas. "I have been dreaming for a long time now to get a project like this off the ground. I think history has been teaching mankind a lesson. Man has been in some civilized living conditions over the last 5000 years, but what progress has we made? Every century since, there has been war and killing amongst tribes and nations; the worst atrocities probably starting with the Egyptian era over 5000 years ago; the Romans around 100bc.in their plans to dominate the known world at that time. Ever since then, every century has seen the death tolls of war increase, for instance…. Napoleon,- The British empire,- The American civil war,- Germany in the first and second world wars and Stalin in Russia as examples. Millions have died over this period of history. It is still going on in the Middle East, in Europe and elsewhere. Some of these wars are in the name of religion, an excuse for killing their fellow man. Just think! We have learned nothing to prevent this in over 5000 years of so of human existence and scientific discovery; only making things worse for the amount we can kill in one battle. It seems that the human brain is not developing fast enough to cope with this madness. The birth rate is going up by the millions every decade and will reach an unsustainable position so far as feeding and housing so many in the world.

We talk of global warming, it will be nothing compared to global madness.

In our richer societies the populace is getting overweight and our hospitals overcrowded as a result. In the poorer regions starvation is rampant.

I want to make an attempt to change all this by applying the knowledge we have now to change the thinking of the human race in the future. If we are successful it will create a very radical change, which may prove very controversial to humans living today.

We will have to work in relative secret, and disguise our work at the start.

We don’t want to be like Galileo and be threatened with death for our beliefs.

There are many fanatics out there, religious or otherwise who would delight in bringing us down.

Well… friends, would you be willing to embark on such a project with me?"

All at the table were unanimous that they would.

Great, said Douglas. "I want you all to consider in the next few weeks what you would require in a laboratory if it was your own choice. We will meet again and decide the layout for this at the next meeting. Thanks for your encouragement on this project. See you all soon!

    July 2016

    Canary Islands

John and Joan were together lying on a beach in the Canary Island of Tenerife under a clear sky.

Their bodies soaking up the sun as they lay in their swim suits, brimmed hats and dark glasses; with a light breeze blowing over them.

This is the life, said John. I’m glad we decided to take a few days away from our work to contemplate our future plans. Talking of future plans…I have something for you. Out of his bag he handed Joan a small box. Her eyes opened wide as she opened it. Inside was a beautiful Safire and diamond engagement ring. She just jumped into his arms. Yes... yes… yes, she said, as they kissed.

The next day at lunch in a quiet restaurant for lunch, John was talking.

I think we are in for some very strange experiences in the near future.

You’re right! Joan replied. This project will open up some very strange possibilities. I know from some of my experiences at the research department in the Hospital were I am working. The working of the human brain is so complex and variable with the different patients we have to treat. Douglas is very experienced and way ahead in his research. I have read many of his papers on the subject. It is for this reason I would be prepared to join as a group. I could learn an awful lot from him. How about you? Your speciality is more quantum mechanics, not human brain research.

Ah.... but computer science is to be part of this project. I would be of use in building mechanical systems and integrating programs together. I have developed a power source to which I have a prototype ready to try. It is called LENR (Low energy nuclear reactor). It is a fusion system which can produce continuous power over a long period with very little refuelling periods. I have a feeling this would be of immense value to this project. There are lots of individuals today working on these type of experiments. The Nuclear Science community in general have rejected these experiments owing to two scientists in the 1990’s named Pons and Fleischmann declaring they had created a cold fusion reaction producing more power out than being put in. The quantum physicists at the time declared this impossible as it defied the laws of quantum physics. They declared fusion can only occur under very high temperatures such as the sun. They could not replicate Pon’s results. The two scientists were ostracized. However… many people including myself have continued to experiment in this area with some promising results. As I said my prototype is ready for test.

Very exciting, said Joan. I will be in close cooperation with Douglas on his project.

Ok lets go back to our apartment I am feeling amorous, said John. You will have to take me out to a good restaurant tonight if I bow to your request," said Joan laughing.

    Dublin

A meeting took place in early August at Elizabeth’s apartment with all five present. The discussion was on what equipment they would need to start the project.

They all realised at the end of this discussion that this project was going to be very expensive to equip. Douglas spoke. My friends, I have made a rough calculation as how much this start-up up will cost, I reckon at least $3,000,000. Does that shock you Elizabeth?

Elizabeth replied I am not dismayed. I knew in my heart the cost would be high if we are hoping to get results. It will be money well spent if we do. Please go ahead with the purchases you all need. I will keep a close eye on costs and try to get the best bargains. I’m good at that!

Great said Douglas We will be very indebted to you for this great gesture.

They all offered their thanks to Elizabeth.

    Sept 2016

    Dublin

After a few more meetings a plan of where the laboratory should be based was discussed.

Douglas spoke. "We need to keep this laboratory as secret as possible. May I suggest one of the best ways to hide
