The Chronicles of Devi - Cosmos & Mahisha is my second book. The good response to my first book The Himalayan Revelation has encouraged me to continue penning my effervescent ruminations. I am an engineer by education and a technologist by profession and more than anything else I love travelling and exploring new places.During my two decade active corporate career and travels into the lap of nature and history, I have came across many people, places and the tales associated with them which have left me enriched by some told and some often untold stories. The Himalayas of Ladakh and Hampi are couple of those places which have left an everlasting impression on me. Their enigmatic environs hide many tales inside them, some of which have been passed from one generation to another. The Himalayan Revelation is my attempt to weave in some of those tales in a modern context. Though it is purely a work of fiction but the story is developed using facts gleamed from history and modern times. In The Chronicles of Devi, I have attempted to tell a story which has captivated many minds for generations. Our ancient literature is full of enchanting stories. But most of these stories are hidden in the beautiful intricacies of Sanskrit in Vedas, Purans, and Shlokas. I have picked one such gem and have narrated this story in my own modernistic interpretation while keeping its essence intact- it is a story of a single woman and her lion fighting the forces of evil to preserve the balance of nature.I hope you like both the books.Pankaj

    Stirrings in the Asur Empire

One thousand years had passed since Bhuvan was rid of Mahisha by Devi’s incarnation, Mahalakshmi, and life on Bhuvan was flourishing.

Saraswati had created the heptatonic musical scale and established a solid foundation for Indian classical music. She constructed the scale with seven basic Swars: shadja, rishabh, gandhar, madhyam, pancham, dhaivat, and nishad. These the inhabitants of Bhuvan later came to know as Sa, Re, Ga, Pa, Dha, Ni, and Sargam.

She had then sprinkled nature with these Swar, or notes. Birds sang, water dripped, leaves rustled, wind sighed, clouds thundered, fire crackled, and animals and humans spoke and sang in merry tones. The books of knowledge called the Vedas were written, and songs were composed and hymns were chanted, amidst the millions and millions of sounds of nature composed of the seven notes. People enjoyed the lavish wealth and prosperity that Lakshmi bestowed upon them. There was Life and there was Death as the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiv preserved the delicate balance of Nature with able assistance from Indra and the other lords who governed the elements of the natural world.

But in the Asur Empire, which flourished in under-earth Patal, some were not happy. Although many, many years had passed since their ancestors witnessed the vanquishing of Mahisha, they had still not reconciled themselves to defeat at the hands of Devi and the subsequent handing over of power to the Devas. Stirrings of revenge were resurging in the hearts of the Asurs. Deep within them a hungry desire to once again be the supreme lords of Bhuvan still lived and flourished.

The biggest obstacle to their plans was Devi.

    Danava princes confer

As the centuries passed, the race of Danavas ruled over the Asurs and established a powerful kingdom in under-earth Patal. Two young prince-brothers of this race, Shumbh and Nishumbh, were very ambitious and wanted to rule over all of Bhuvan. They had heard that their great ancestor had once managed to subjugate the entirety of Bhuvan and had brought the Devas and Surs to their knees, but had later perished in a battle with Devi.

Now, hundreds of years later, they harbored the same desire. In the beautiful gardens of under-earth Patal, Shumbh and Nishumbh planned their strategy.

Unless we conquer middle-earth and upper-earth and become the rulers of the entire Tri-Bhuvan, we Asurs will never get the respect we deserve, the handsome Shumbh suggested to his younger, and equally handsome, brother Nishumbh. They were riding their shiny black stallions, having come out to hunt in the jungle.

Nishumbh spotted a wild boar hiding behind a bush. He nudged his stallion with his boots to bring it to a sudden halt and fired an arrow. The arrow whizzed through the leaves of the trees and struck the boar right behind the ears. Surprised and struck by a sudden pain, it let out a final squeal and fell over on its side. Nishumbh trotted his stallion toward it, thrust his spear into it, and flung its body onto a horse-cart that his followers had brought to carry away the brothers’ kill.

    Shumbh eyed his maneuvers appreciatively.

Nishumbh looked at his elder brother and continued, "Yes, we need to take our armies to upper-earth Swarg
