    Calum’s Rage

Calum thought about his plan for a few moments longer. The dragoons would be racing down the road in less than fifteen minutes, which was barely time for them to set up a workable ambush, but if his plan worked, all that would be unnecessary. One thing he’d learned in his years of war was that when disciplined cavalry met irregular forces, the cavalry always won. He wasn’t about to put that knowledge to the test now.

He rapped his leg once to confirm his decision and turned to Robbie. Have you still got that red coat?

Robbie was dressed in his Macpherson bright red and blue tartan with no red coat to be seen. He looked down pointedly and shook his head. I threw the thing away.

Calum thought to ask the man to go and get it back, but there was no time for that. Don’t fret, he said reassuringly to the scout, who wasn’t fretting in the least.

John stepped up closer to him. The English dragoons are coming down the road. Remember, laddie?

Aye, said Calum with a wink. I’m counting on it.

John took a long breath and let it out in a sigh. He could ask, but then that would just ruin the surprise. He shook his head slowly. We should m’be walk away?

Calum nodded. We should perhaps run away.

At last, said Alistair, a bonnie idea.

Calum pointed along the road towards the bend and the English infantry beyond, and started to move, but John stepped in front of him.

Those wee Englishmen will think we’re the rebels and shoot us to death. Y’know that?

No, said Calum, they won’t. He pointed up the hill at the woods. The rebels are in yon woods. Can ya no hear the shouting and firing?

John glanced up the hill and then looked along the road. It is just bold enough to work. He nodded once and let Calum past.

The twenty men made for a fearsome sight as they ran along the muddy road away from the dragoons. Fierce men with drawn broadswords, their kilts flapping and mud splattering out in all directions. Warriors all, but running from a fight. But if anyone had asked Calum, he would have told them they were running towards a fight, not from one. Nobody asked; they just followed him without question.

Another crackle of musket fire and the scream of war cries rolled down the hillside from the woods where the pitched battle between the English infantry and Lord Loudon’s Camerons was raging.

Colonel Fulton licked his lips and looked along the hoof-churned road. The crimson of the mens’ uniforms clashed harshly with the autumn orange of the hedge on which they rested their muskets and waited. They seemed steady enough, grumbling and exchanging remarks to ease the tension. But his mouth was dry, and his ears buzzed as if a dozen blowflies were zipping around him.

He looked across the wide field to the edge of the woods. If the rebels came, it would be from there. That would be a good thing. They would be out in the open and exposed
