INTRODUCTION

Are you nervous & worried about being driven by a learner driver?

This defensive driving text is for learners to study, & instructors/parents or friends who wish to know ‘how & what’ to correctly and safely teach in 4 easy lessons.

Some time ago I read that the 17 to 25 year age group only make up 15% of our total population but account for a huge 35 to 40% of our road deaths. This statistic alone prompted me to write this book in an attempt to help parents to teach their children correctly and to give learner drivers a reference book so they will hopefully learn correctly from day one.

"The economic and social costs of road crashes are staggering. Projections by the Roads & Traffic Authority for the state of New South Wales, Australia during the next ten year period indicate we can expect 10,000 deaths, 100,000 hospital casualties, 14,000 casualties with permanent brain damage, quadriplegia or paraplegia, 300,000 other casualties, $20 billion in financial and economic costs (lost income, sickness benefits, insurance costs etc). The human consequences are great. One family in four can expect to suffer road trauma to one of its immediate members over the next ten years."

When you obtain a learner’s permit, you are really only interested in learning the basics of driving so you will pass your driving test first time. Learners have asked me time and time again, ‘Is that part of driving going to be in the test?’ My answer is, ‘Does it really matter. The test itself is relatively easy but staying alive and uninjured on the roads is not.’ It‘s not important to pass your license test first time, it is important to drive safely and be a good driver.

A counterproductive rumour passed on by learners is that government ‘driver examiners’ will fail you for unimportant things, but this is not true. If the examiner notes that you aren’t going to be a danger to yourself and others while driving, you’ll probably walk away with your new license.

Have one or two lessons weekly if you use a commercial driving school. Use the school as you would a golf professional, learn the correct technique then go away and practice with your parents or friends before the next driving school lesson.

Some parents will pay $50 (20 pound) an hour for their own golf lessons, learning to drive a golf ball but to pay that much for important, possibly lifesaving lessons for their children to safely drive a car - no way - it’s too expensive.

Remember when you do obtain your provisional license, ‘P plate only stands for practice’. You have a license but you are still learning. I have always believed in the "Keep it Simple" system of teaching and I hope this book conforms to that idea.
