    Chapter 1: Love Story

Jack Holliday walked through the store and stopped at the end of a long aisle. He looked down the row and saw nothing but a blur of red and pink. On one side of him were shelves lined with heart-shaped boxes of chocolates, pink and red M&Ms, packages of candy-shaped hearts, bags of red lollipops and cellophane-wrapped stuffed teddy bears. On the other side of him were stacks of thin boxes displaying cards that represented every kids cartoon and character available.

What type of Valentine’s Day cards do you want to give out at school this year? Jack’s mother asked. They have Spiderman, SpongeBob, and look, they even have Star Wars!

I want Star Wars cards! said Jack’s four-year-old brother, Peter. Do I get to take Valentine cards to school too?

I think you do, his mother said. Jack looked at all the choices and had no idea what he wanted.

Can I get two kinds? Jack asked. He definitely wanted the Star Wars cards, but he also really liked the wild animal cards, especially since those had lions and tigers on them.

One pack of cards will be more than enough for everyone in your class, his mother said. Those animal ones look nice. I’m not sure the girls would want Star Wars cards.

There are girls in my class who like Star Wars, Jack said. Shelby has some of the action figures.

Which one is Shelby? Jack’s mother asked.

She sits by me, Jack said. She’s really nice.

Well you can get whichever ones you want, but you have to decide who gets each one and sign all 24 of them, his mother said.

When do I have to do them? Jack asked.

Valentine’s Day is only a couple days away, which is why we need to pick out your cards, his mother said.

Can I get candy to put in the cards too? Jack asked.

Me too! Peter said. I want to put candy in my cards.

Pick out your cards and then we can pick out candy, their mother said. Jack and Peter both put the Star Wars cards into the cart and ran down the aisle and back up again looking over the huge candy selection.

I want these heart suckers, Peter said. Can I eat one too? His mother nodded and put them in the shopping cart.

Jack, did you decide on your candy yet? his mother asked. Once again Jack was torn between two choices, either the candy hearts or the chocolate hearts.

Can I please get two kinds? Jack begged. He hated having to make decisions like this.

Why don’t you get the candy hearts because the chocolates might melt, his mother said. Jack agreed and placed the candy into the cart. He felt happy with his choices and was actually looking forward to filling out the cards and handing them out to his friends on Valentine’s Day.

When they got home from the store Jack sat down at the kitchen table and began sorting through the cards. Peter sat down beside him and repeated whatever Jack did.

Cool, there’s six different ones, Jack said. Hmmm, I wonder which one I should give to Shelby.

I like Darth Vader the best, Peter said. But I need help writing the names on them.

"Peter, if you sign your name on each one, then I’ll write out the name of the person it’s
