About this ebook

The reason behind Sardar Patel’s success in his advocacy was that of his remarkable reasoning and argument power and his sharp wit. He would present any matter in a very simple manner and then suddenly would draw such conclusions that the entire scenario would take a turn. It was a rule of the Britishers, for whom it was very normal to trap people in wrong cases and thereby punish them for it. They used to normally entangle those people whom they would doubt them of being secret agents, but the bureaucrats had developed a habit of taking revenge in result to this they used to entangle those people.

    Preface

The reason behind Sardar Patel’s success in his advocacy was that of his remarkable reasoning and argument power and his sharp wit. He would present any matter in a very simple manner and then suddenly would draw such conclusions that the entire scenario would take a turn. It was a rule of the Britishers, for whom it was very normal to trap people in wrong cases and thereby punish them for it. They used to normally entangle those people whom they would doubt them of being secret agents, but the bureaucrats had developed a habit of taking revenge in result to this they used to entangle those people. Sardar Patel had studied deeply about the ways of the police how they used to entangle and trap the innocent people. Sardar Patel would always study anything very deeply and then later on would find out some alternate solution to it through which he could disclose his manipulated story in trapping the innocent. With this it would become easy for freeing the innocent. By solving these cases Sardar Patel along with success in advocacy was able to earn money and at the same time was able to have a satisfaction in getting justice to those innocents who were entangled in false cases.

    1. Childhood

Without the story and struggle of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel the chapter of independence would be unfinished and dull. Whenever we talk about the founders of our country – Gandhi, Nehru and Patel’s name get’s imprinted in gold in History. Patel was one of the three pillars of the country who guided millions of Indians when they were deep in the slumber of slavery. He kept the torch lit until the country felt the wave of independence. Without any hesitation we can say that all the national leaders were important in the freedom movement but it would still not be wrong in giving this trio a special place in the chapter of our independence struggle.

The trio was also in limelight because of constant feuds between them. But despite this they worked together with great support and understanding because their aim was one – the country’s benefit and each of them was dedicated and devoted to it. Their feuds on different matters made them dislike each other. Patel would be forever remembered as a non – controversial national leader and a great administrator. His utmost patriotism shaped his character in such a way that he was awarded with the title ‘Iron Man of India.’

    Family

He was born in a family of farmers. One of his biographers has rightly stated that he was down to earth and so had he remained till he died. His father Jharebhai practiced farming in the Karmasad Village in the Borsad Talluka of district Khera in Gujarat. He owned 10 acres of land. Their family belonged to Leva caste of the Kshatriya’s. This caste considered them to be the members of Ram’s son i.e. of Luv- Kush’s family. This part of Gujarat in particular has many people belonging to this same caste. It is said that they settled here from Punjab. They are given the name ‘Patel’ because they belonged to the Patidari branch of the respective caste.

These people were fierce warriors and had participated actively in the Revolt of 1857 which is also called the ‘First War of Independence’. Jharebhai also took part in it by joining Rani Laxmi Bai’s army. After she was defeated, King Malhar Rao Holker of Indore took him as a prisoner. One fine day, Jharebhai was taken to the King to meet him in the way of the prisoner. When they reached the King’s chamber, he was busy playing chess and so everyone stood quietly. The King as badly stuck at a point and was on the verge of losing. Jharebhai was a great player of chess and he couldn’t control himself and blurted out a move to the King. This changed the whole game and the King won. He was so elated that eh freed Jharebhai, who went away to his village to look after his family and farming business.

Sardar Patel’s mother, Laadbai, was the second wife of Jharebhai. After the death of his first wife he had married Laadbai who was 18 years younger to him. His first wife hadn’t given him a child but Laadbai gave him 6 children – 5 sons and a daughter who was the youngest among all the children. Sardar’s mother was a religious and pious woman. She took care of eth household very understandingly in the small income of her husband. His parent’s behaviour and attitude contributed a lot in the developing of Sardar’s character. Courage, determination, the strength to struggle, sophistication, hard work and many other such qualities added up to make Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and fetched him a place in History as one of the founders of the country.

    2. Birth and Primary Education

Vallabhbhai was born on 31st October, 1857 in a small village in Kathiawar in Gujarat. This was his maternal home. As per the traditions, Laadbai’s parents wanted to have the birth of all her children take place in their own home. They loved her a lot and, hence, the name. Another reason was that they were extremely rich and the place had all the privileges.

He was the fourth child and came after Somabhai, Narsinghbhai and Vittalbhai. Their youngest brother was named, Kaasibhai. Their youngest sibling and only sister, Daahiba, was loved and cherished by the all the five brothers. The children loved each other dearly and this love was maintained till the end of their lives.

His primary education took place in his own village, Karmasad. Village studies did have their own level. Patel loved studying and would study at home whenever he got time. Slowly – slowly he was started to be counted among the most intelligent children of the village. The teachers would also be rendered speechless at his question and wouldn’t be able to answer them.

During schooling his two qualities came into limelight – The strength to struggle and leadership qualities. Three examples of the above are very famous –

Some teachers got together and made a rule that the books had to be bought from eth school itself. They would charge the students whatever money they wished for. Patel didn’t like this exploitation of the students and he revolted against it. He got together his friends and classmates and told them to not buy books from the school. Due to this revolt the school had to be closed for 5 – 6 days. Finally, the teachers accepted defeat. The rule was dissolved and the students and their parents breathed a sigh of relief.

Another incident took place when Patel studied in 6th standard. In those times, the teachers would beat and abuse the children. A certain teacher was very strict and once he continuously struck a child with a rod. The child cried bitterly but was rendered helpless. Patel couldn’t tolerate this. He gathered his friends and classmates and went on a strike. The principal saw into the matter and found the student’s complaining to be right. He made the teacher take an oath that he would not beat a child like this in future.

In Metric the students had to take up one language out of Sanskrit and Gujarati. Patel took up Gujarati. Chotelaal was a teacher of Gujarati but a devotee of Sanskrit. He angrily asked Patel the reason for joining the Gujarati batch. Instead of replying in a positive manner, Patel jokingly said, Sir, if everyone would have taken Sanskrit then whom would have you taught? Then you would have to stay at home. The whole class burst out laughing at this. The teacher was enraged and he punished Patel by ordering him to write tables till 200. Patel thought that the punishment was not right and so he didn’t write the tables.

Next day, the teacher asked him, You have written the tables?

In Gujarati, the word tables (Pahra) is used for the children of buffaloes.

Patel said while trying to sound innocent, I had brought 200 Pahra (calves of buffaloes) but two were very naughty and created problems. Seeing these others Pahra. After that the two also ran off.

Making fun of a teacher like this is not a common thing. This acted like air to the fire and the teacher was enraged beyond limits. He decided that Patel needed a bigger punishment and so he sent him to the principal.

When the principal questioned him about it, Vallabhbhai replied, "Gentleman, sir is Gujarati teacher. If he would had asked me
