Chapter One - Lights in the Sky

Jack Rowan sat on the porch of his wooden fishing shack and watched the moon rising over Dark Lake. He drank a well-earned whiskey and soda and smiled happily to himself.

At forty years of age, Jack was a self-made multi-millionaire, through his electronics chain stores. He had worked his way up from a simple interest in electronics as a teenager, to an I.T. specialist who understood the needs of the average American who wanted to use their gadgets for communicating and socialising and not to use complicated spreadsheets and business data. A loan from an obliging bank helped him on his way. His slogan ‘Electronics made Easy!’ had paved his way to success.

He brushed a mosquito away from his tanned, unlined face and ran his fingers through his dark, blonde hair. Jack was not a vain man, but with his six-foot frame, trim body and bright blue eyes, he was considered quite a catch amongst the social set of Grand City. But, Jack had never found the right woman to share his electronic empire with and several short-term but unsatisfactory romantic relationships had eventually fizzled out. For over twenty years, Jack had put his work and business affairs first and now, he felt it was time to finally reap the rewards of his hard work. A major Japanese electronics firm was now wanting to buy his chain of businesses and he had taken himself away, to indulge in a rare holiday, to think the offer over. Was it time to sell or not?

He had hoped that a few weeks at the lake would help him decide, but so far, he hadn’t come to any real decision. Sell his little empire and then do what? That was the real problem; he had no real hobbies or other interests, so he foresaw a bleak future ahead, if he did sell. Jack sighed and sipped his cold drink and tried to think of something else. He was unaccustomed to indecision and his lack of ability to make a firm decision bothered him.

Jack watched the moon reflected in Dark Lake. In the distance, he could see the lights of several cabins that dotted the shore of the lake. Most of the cabins were owned by city folk who only visited in summer, but there were around a dozen small homes for locals who resented the seasonal visitors. Luckily Jack had helped several of them out with
