A Little Mischief and a Lotta Love - Donald Bueltmann
About the Book
This book is a tribute to my little furry friend Muffin (AKA Little Muffin Golden Paws) a Yorkshire terrier that captured our hearts from the first time we saw her. We received her as a Christmas gift from our sons and she brightened our lives from the age of eight weeks until she passed away this year at the age of fifteen. As if she knew her importance, Muffin waited until the week that I completed this book to depart.
Many of these stories are true, others came into existence as Muffin whispered into my ear things that she would really like to do and together we breathed life into them. She asked me to use a fictitious name in this book, so she is known as Mischief.

The Naming
The newborn puppy awoke cold and hungry. She nuzzled around in the dark looking for food, found it, ate until full, then gurgled happily.
She heard a voice, Good morning, little one.
The little puppy asked, Who are you?
I’m your Mother.
Why can't I see you, Mother?
Because your eyes haven’t opened yet.
Two warm puppies wiggled over and Mother said, Say hi to your brother and sister, Tuffy and Candy.
Little One said, Hi.
Hi,
said her brother and sister as they snuggled against her.
Before dropping off to sleep, Little One whispered to Mother, Why do they have names and I don't?
I'm trying to think of a special name for you, but until I do I'll just call you Little One.
Why Little One?
Because, you’re the littlest puppy.
The tiny puppy softly protested, But I don't feel little, and I still want a name. Please think hard, Mother.
Mother sighed and said, I’ll try, baby. I’ll try!
Over the next few weeks the pups ate, slept, and grew stronger.
One day, Little One heard Tuffy say, Whoa, I feel something warm on my eyes. I can see light.
Not to be outdone, Candy said, I think I can see too!
Little One, feeling left out, said, Why can't I?
Because you're little—you're so little you don't even have a name.
They started to tease her, Look at the little baby. She can’t even see.
Little One growled, That's cruel. Why are you so mean?
Then she recovered enough to ask, What did you do—how can you see?
Candy replied, I'm not sure. I tried really hard to open my eyes and suddenly felt them opening.
Little One grunted and tried to open her eyes. After straining for some time, she triumphantly cried, I can see! I can see! Whoa…you guys are sure hairy little rascals.
Tuffy retorted, Are not.
Are too.
Tuffy hesitated, Hey, we’re supposed to be hairy—we’re dogs.
Little One snickered and said, You’re right. We’re supposed to be hairy.
Then she waddled away.
Candy and Tuffy waddled after her. The puppies fell into a pile and wrestled until tired, then curled up and took a nap.
It wasn’t long before the pups could walk and run. They delighted in finding trouble, and Mother had a hard time keeping up with them.
One morning after breakfast, the pups went looking for mischief. Mother called after them, Stay away from the chicken yard.
Tuffy asked Little One, What's a chicken?
I don't know, but if we're supposed to stay away from them, they must be fun.
They hurried across the barnyard and came to a fence. On the other side some funny- looking animals were pecking in the dirt.
Little One said, Maybe those are chickens.
Tuffy barked, What kind of animals are you?
One of the animals slowly strutted over and replied, I'm a chicken. Why do you ask?
Our mother told us not to bother the chickens.
Then I suggest you obey.
It turned and went back to the other birds.
Little One said to Tuffy, So that's a chicken. Look! They only have two legs. We have four—I'll bet we can catch one.
What will we do after we catch it?
Tuffy asked.
I don't know. Let's catch one, then decide.
Tuffy grinned and yapped, Let's go!
Candy shook her head. No, we shouldn't. Mother won't like it.
Little One said, She's not here. What are you afraid of?
The smallest pup walked closer to the fence and scooted under the lowest rail, turned, and barked at the other two.
Candy shook her head no. Tuffy ran toward the fence to join Little One.
Candy backed away. I'm going to tell Mother, then you'll be sorry.
They sneered at Candy and said, Nyeah, Nyeah, little momma's baby.
While Candy went to find Mother, the two ran off. They looked back for a second and ran into the middle of the flock of chickens which immediately began squawking and the two startled pups began yapping. The chickens scattered, but then saw how small their ferocious attackers were. They united and went after the poor pups with their strong-sharp beaks.
Little One was pecked on the nose, and Tuffy was pecked on the head. When the pups realized that they were no longer the attackers, they turned tail and ran toward the fence, yelping and howling all the way.
Suddenly, a large black-and-white animal
