    Chapter 1

    What Is Prayer?

You are driving on a long journey, and while

nearing your destination, your vehicle starts to jerk. You look at the fuel gauge and what you see shocks you. The needle is indicating that it has reached the empty mark. You start speaking to your vehicle and you start slowing down – a hill ahead. It slopes downwards. Just on the other side of the hill is a small town with a petrol station. You saw the signboard next to the road advertising the petrol station. You start going down hill and you take the vehicle out of gear. You are free-running it into this small town. It is now sputtering but you continue talking to your vehicle. As you enter the petrol station the engine dies. Wow! You just made it.

It’s as if a miracle took place. Having spoken to

your vehicle, it reached the closest destination for a refuel. There was a sense of peace, as if your vehicle heard you and obeyed – it kept going. Prayer is similar to this in its basic form. You have a problem and you start to pray. God listens and answers your prayer. True prayer is much more powerful though. Prayer is something which God has commanded His people or followers to do every day. Let’s look at a definition or explanation on prayer. The Word Web thesaurus and dictionary [a small program for computer usage] defines prayer as follows. The act of communicating with a deity [especially as a petition or in adoration or contrition or thanksgiving]. It is also a reverent petition to a deity. It is an urgent or earnest request. It is when someone prays to God. And I can go on, but let’s discover how do we live in victory by praying.

"Therefore confess your sins to each other and

pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." – James 5:16 [NIV]

Let me offer you a small study on praying or

prayer. Here are some Scriptural terms. The following Hebrew terms are rendered prayer: Tepilla in general, supplication to God, which means a prayer asking God for something or a request [Psalm 65:2, Job 16:17]. It is also intercession, supplication for another person or persons [2 Kings 19:4, Jeremiah 7:16]. Atar to burn incense, which means to pray to God [Job 33:26]. The prayers of the righteous being likened to incense. Lahash to whisper a prayer uttered in a low voice. Those who feel convicted of their sins usually pray such a prayer – a soft call unto God [Isaiah 26:6].

The following Greek terms are rendered prayer:

Deesis prayer for particular benefits. Euche which occurs once in the New Testament in the sense of a prayer [James 5:15]. These are some of many such studies of the Greek and Hebrew terms for prayer throughout the bible. I only touched on the subject so that you can understand how prayer was used and for what purpose. Prayer is something which we cannot really fathom, something which is beyond our understanding. My own definition of prayer is building an ongoing bond or relationship with God. The more we pray, the more we get to know who God is and we discover the power behind prayer. Prayer is a language which takes us into the Holy of Holies, into the presence of God. In this manner we grow closer to God and we remain linked to Him forever. Prayer also offers us wisdom and knowledge. This happens when we allow a time to listen to Him talking to us, directly or through the Word.

Let me offer you some background history about

prayer. Prayer has been, from the beginning, the principal means by which men, created in the image of God, have given expression of their attitude toward Him; and from the earliest times, ever since in the days of Enoch when "men began calling upon the name of the Lord" [Genesis 4:26], it has formed an integral part of the public worship of God. Throughout the Old Testament everyone had expressed their dispositions and feelings of their hearts by praising, thanksgiving, prayer, and intercession before God [Genesis 18:22-33, Exodus 32:11-13, Daniel 6:10]. As early as David’s time we hear private prayer being offered three times a day [Psalm 55:17]. This became an established practice [again Daniel
