About this ebook

Fleetwood takes us on an adventure of romance, passion, and a touch of suspense, set in one of the world's most notorious locations -- Oakland, California.

After witnessing the ghetto mafia mob style murder of his mother from his kindergarten window, after sitting in a courtroom years later watching his brotha get 20 to life, after watching his hero -- his father -- crumble from cancer and die, after living day in and day out surrounded by the family business -- which was selling dope, DeShawn James struggled to find his own way.

All the pain he felt inside was caused by the Dope Game, the same Game which had provided for him all his life, the same Game that gave his family the name THE JAMES GANG. In his city, in Oakland, they ran the drug trade. For years THE JAMES GANG had controlled it -- but DeShawn was never involved in it in any kinda way, no aspect at all. Now, he was older, and he was inheriting it, being pulled into it, and he wanted no part of it.

Would DeShawn betray his family or pursue his passion of music, which he was good at, with the love of his life Amani? Or would he be forced into the family business? His family was already rich. They didn't need more money. His life had become a Bloodtest.

Fleetwood

FleetwoodThe author of the book entitledHip Hop Tried 2 Kill MeFleetwood is one person that's had a long journey trying to find the treasures in Hip Hop and, in his days, became a writer, rap artist, music producer, videographer, motivational speaker and a community activist. With roots in both California and North Carolina, Fleetwood embodies the best of both sides of the coast. As much as he has a southern accent, he also has a lot of West Coast flavor. Breaded in San Francisco, he grew up in the neighborhood affectionally known to many as Fillmore a place that was called the Harlem of the West Coast because of its rich history in jazz and culture. But because of strong family ties in the South, Fleetwood often found himself going back and forth from California to Greensboro, North Carolina , which is a place that is popular to black colleges. In the days of Sugar Hill Gang, Fleetwood developed the passion for rapping after he wrote his first rhyme across the street from a cementary where his mother was buried down South. Later in his life, he got accepted to Music Tech in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he received an Associate Arts Degree in Music Engineering, and while he was living in Minniapolis, MN., he produced a young talented singer known as R.L. before he became popular with the R&B group called Next. After college and suffering from a temporary setback to the penal code system in Minnesota, Fleetwood returned to San Francisco and produced several groups like a group he named Probable Cause, which sold over 5000 CD's locally and opened up for acts such as the E-40, Notorious B.I.G., Bone Thugs N Harmony, to name a few.Fleetwood also began appearing in various films directed by a local talent, Kevin Epps, and one film, Straight Outta Hunters Point, became a highly acclaimed film that received numerous awards world wide. In the meantime, Fleetwood got involved in working in the community with young people. He began volunteering for a youth program called Straight Forward Club and started speaking to troubled youth in group homes and in juvenile halls, and he also got involved with the Proposition 21 Movement that focused on justice and freedom for youth in California.Years later, Fleetwood went back to North Carolina and launched a music video show on cable access called the Dirty Dirty that was renamed On Da Porch. And at the same time, he also formed another rap group called The Foundation . Fleetwood would later come back to the Bay Area and feel his demise in Hip Hop. But suddenly a light shined over him and he discovered that the treasures he was in search of in his journey lied within himself. Today, Fleetwood is a man of God and shares his experiences about his life in and outta hip hop with others in San Quentin Prison, juvenile hall facilities and youth programs across the Bay Area and has established his own non profit THE HOMEBOY HOTLINE in the bay area which helps ex-offenders with there re-entry into the community thru job resources. And also has launch a new inspirational GOD fearing movement in 2008 called the DOPE BOYZ which stands fo DOING .OUR. CHAPTER 1

The year was 1989 and if you didn’t know better you’d have thought you were in Mexico, fo real. All you saw were small Latino businesses lining the streets, mostly clothing stores and restaurants. Behind the stores were hills with houses where the city’s elite lived. But down here, this was the Lower East Side – the Lower East Side of Oakland, California.

Up in one of these buildings, in a small doctor’s office sat Ms Pearl, her once beautiful brown skin had turned a burgundy complexion over the years from heavy drug use, it was blending in with the wood paneling that covered the walls, the brown leather furniture and the cheap tan shag carpet. She sat there, but her mind was a million miles away. Ten years prior she was a registered nurse with major health benefits, a proud woman. Now here she sat, this was definitely a place that she wouldn’t be seeking health care. She sat across from the doctor with her face in her hands, crying.

The doctor looked at her. Ms Pearl, your test results indicate that you’ll be having twins.

Twins, Pearl repeated, What I’m gone do with twin babies?

Well I told you I could arrange a situation for one child but for the other… that’s another story.

Can’t you speak to the parents and ask them to take both babies doc?

I’ll see what I can do but I can’t guarantee you anything ma’am.

Well thank you, I’ll be waiting on your call, said Ms Pearl.

Have a good day, said the doctor. I’ll be in contact with you in a week or two.

For anyone else this would have been a happy moment, but Ms Pearl was a dope fiend addicted to heroin and in no shape physically, mentally or financially to raise a child. She’d already made a deal with the doctor to sell one baby, not knowing at the time that she was carrying twin girls. Now reality was setting in as she walked down the hall of the doctor’s office. She had no idea what to do with the other baby. The elevator door opened and closed then opened again. As she walked out onto the street time zoomed by.

Five months later, Ms Pearl lays in a bed with two beautiful newborn girls in her arms. She’d made a deal with the doctor where she’d be allowed to hold and name them regardless of the outcome of the adoption. But now, holding the babies with tears in her eyes she felt the pain of letting her child go to strangers to possibly never see her again. It was even harder splitting up twins who would never have a chance to bond.

The doctor walked in and she didn’t know which baby to hand him.

Hello Ms Pearl, have you made a decision on what baby to keep? he asked. And have you given them names?

Ms Pearl realized at that moment she hadn’t given it any thought. Her great grandmother Bonnie’s face flashed in her mind as she spoke softly.

    Bonnie and Amani, she said.

What did you say Ms Pearl? asked the doc.

My baby girls' names will be Bonnie and Amani.

Well you have to decide which you will keep and which one goes to the couple.

    Her eyes began to water.

Take Bonnie, she said handing him the baby she held in her left arm. Her great grandmother’s spirit will always be with her, she said softly, with tears in her eyes.

As she lay in the hospital bed clutching Amani, Ms Pearl’s mind shifted from sorrow to pain, with her knees aching and stomach hurting she knew what it was she was dope sick and needed some of that heroin. That horse, smack, hop, black tar.

She wondered how long it would be before the doctor came back, the thought that she had sold one of her daughters won’t leave her mind. She knew it was wrong, she made a promise silently that she wouldn’t blow all the money on drugs and that she would move outta the projects and put some money down on a home for her and Amani and try to provide the best life she could for them and do her best to kick the habit she had even though deep in her mind she knew it would be damn near impossible.

    CHAPTER 2

Across town on the west side of Oakland, where the spirit of the Black Panthers still crept in the streets, the effects of heroin and crack were obvious, gripping this neighborhood of dilapidated houses and dope fiends, bullet shells and broken crack pipes. This was the playground for three young boys Mason, Robert and Terry. It was like any other day as they strolled through the alleys looking for anything of interest they could use to pass the time or bring a smile it a place that usually frowned back. Usually they’d find used condoms, needles or shell casings. Occasionally they might find a bundle hidden by a local D boy who got busted or just wondered off to far from his stash. But, as they kicked the cans, Terry noticed what looked like a woman’s leg sticking out of a bunch of old clothes. As they got closer the terrible odor filled their nostrils.

Man I think somebody is dead under that trash, said Terry.

Move that trash back and let’s see, said Mason.

You crazy, I ain’t touching that, said Terry.
