Writing Dialogue
Have you ever picked up a self-help book at the bookstore? Let me give you an example: How to lose 15 pounds in 2 hours.
(No such title exists, which is why I chose it.) Seems to me all self-help books start out the same way—with pages and pages of definitions. Instead of giving the reader actual tools to lose those fifteen pounds in an hour, the authors cover topics such as emotional ties to food, the human digestive system, and basic nutrition.
Okay, but if I pick up a book because I want to lose fifteen pounds in an hour, I don’t want a hundred pages telling me what a
