Introduction
Several years ago I went through a lengthy health crisis following a stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis. I learned an enormous amount. I was also a practicing hypnotherapist and, as fate would have it, ended up meeting several people who were also in crisis, though for many different reasons.
I wanted to write a book that would reassure the reader that no matter what, you still have power over you. I wrote this book as a hands-on, step-by-step guide to using challenges as a springboard to your next stage of personal evolution.
A few years ago when the economies of the USA and many other countries nosedived, many people found their intended futures went right with it.
Words that were once reserved for an edge of society moved into the center of our global mosaic: Layoffs. Discouraged
workers. Businesses closing. Foreclosures. Family, friends, neighbors, cities and states facing bankruptcy
These past few years have created plenty of dark – and sleepless – nights for a whole lot of us. These are added to the life shocks and endings of all sorts that humans face –severe illness, debilitating accidents, death of loved ones, and relationships dissolving.
I knew from my experience and that of my clients that even if we can’t stop things from sometimes hitting us directly, we can change how we react to life’s shocks, challenges and dramas.
Each of us has the ability to blow the whistle, put up our hand, call in the reserves, name the tune and rewrite the lyrics. We may need some tools for that, or a simple reminder. We may need some guidance to help us find the Wonder Woman or Superman within.
Voila this book, simple enough to be called A,B,C, yet filled with a collective wisdom that I have accessed over years of study and practice. Whether used as a learning tool or a sticky note for your mental fridge, the tips, tools, and activities here are tried, tested, and powerful.
They were designed to give you the self-confidence to make changes you may not even think possible, not yet anyway. These changes can be pragmatic or so vast they guide you to a deep cleanse of old thinking.
It can help anyone going through a rough patch to find calm, joy, positivity, and reframe some of the bad stuff we often tell ourselves.
It is intended for anyone curious about how their life might look in Hi Def, 3D, wide screen, and everyone daring enough to answer the challenge.
The unknown is known for testing nerves and bringing on the unanticipated. Could be rough, could be easy.
It can only be good to face the hard times with an authentic crisis survival book in hand.

Suggestions for using this book
This book is a cornucopia of techniques I have studied and used, methodologies used by trained, practicing psychologists and hypnotherapists, and approaches I developed that have worked well for me.
It is my offering via many broad, strong shoulders to anyone in need of a place to lean on.
If a particular chapter heading jumps out at you it will probably be most productive to go directly there. On the other hand I have tried to keep a semblance of moving along a continuum of clarity and growth.
Each chapter ends with an activity designed as a practical technique or takeaway. How much you personally get from the book will depend in part on how well you take advantage of those targeted activities.
If you have ever considered keeping a journal I’d say now would be a good time.

Dedication
To the three most important men in my life.
To all the courageous spirits who have been there and come out with a smile and a hand extended to others.
To my Village and the love that keeps it flourishing.
"If you have inner peace, the external problems do not affect your deep sense of peace and tranquility. In that state of mind you can deal with situations with calmness and reason, while keeping your inner happiness."
HH the Dalai Lama from the Nobel Lecture, 1989

A is for Anxiety
The source of anxiety lies in the future. If you can keep the future out of mind, you can forget your worries.
Milan Kundera (Czech Novelist, Playwright and Poet, b.1929)
One moment there you are minding your own business and then suddenly like the loud snap of a tree branch, it all changes. BAM!
A phone call you hoped you’d never get. A pink slip. A notice of foreclosure. No matter what face it wears it’s a monster bearing down at full speed about to rip you apart and smash your world into smithereens. Or at least that’s the way it feels.
Bad News is both an emotional assault and a physical hit that profoundly impacts our physiology. As our endocrine system pumps out masses of adrenaline, our heart may pound in our ears, our blood pressure rise to a boil, and our breathing hit hyper speed.
And that’s just the moment of impact.
What happens next? And much later? What is each day like when you open your eyes? What happens when you wake in the night?
If you find yourself battling bogey men and demons at random times of night and day, you could probably use some help. Help is not only the stuff of A.
This book is designed to support you from A to Z. It is a walking stick on your journey from dark nights into many bright sunny days.
How you cope with the ongoing and recurring emotional demands of a Big Blow is the single most telling measurement of how successful you will be at finding your way out of the dark maze and into your custom-built brighter future.
Onions, strawberries and anxiety
I’d like to start with how to scrape yourself up off the floor after the news hits. Getting Bad News is a head-on collision. Everything after that is a process. Understanding doesn’t just stand there in blinding glory and fully present itself. Realizations unfold in layers.
Pain too is revealed in layers, but more like an onion because once cut, there will be tears. Did you know the best way not to cry when your olfactory nerves are upset by an onion is to put a different, strong odor right up to your nose?
Sometimes that’s all you can do when a crisis hits. Replace the onion with a strawberry; remember someone who loves you, some moment that filled you with strength, let the tears dry and the nerves settle.
But that’s momentary. Recurring bouts of anxiety are a byproduct of crisis. If you’ve had really Bad News and it didn’t cause any anxiety either you’re deeply in shock or completely medicated.
It is the rare person that can get through a prolonged crisis without getting all too intimate with anxiety. To overcome it, learn your mind and your body’s signs.
To thine own anxiety be true…
Anxiety is defined in many ways and at many levels. It can go anywhere from a general feeling of malaise to a clinically defined ongoing state of distress.
Obviously anyone with an anxiety disorder needs to seek the counsel of a qualified health care provider. This chapter is for those of us responding to a sudden event and periodically experiencing a feeling of dread or stress that manifests physically and emotionally in almost as many ways as there are individuals experiencing it.
Beyond the basic similarities we all share in the fight or flight mechanism the differences in how we experience anxiety and how we cope with it are enormous. You need to know your signs of anxiety. That’s the first step.
A place of your own
To get out of the anxiety cycle
