    The rebirthing process always hurt. But when cheating death, a little pain is a small price to pay.

    Burt sat on the park bench and stared slack-mouthed at the dark orange glow of the setting sun behind the row of tall maples. Bird silhouettes darted across the sky between the tree tops. Fresh cut grass, the baby powder of nature, wafted through the air.

    At least it happened in spring this time. Last time it was winter and much harder to organize.

    His hands ached, the arthritis raging like a bull in his joints. The change of season always brought that.

    A gentle breeze caressed him; the sweet scent of the irises blooming in pots at either end of the bench overpowered his body odor. It was so hard to bathe when he reached this state, where the body wore down at the slightest exertion and just getting in and out of the tub was a workout.

    He longed for youth again, the strength of young muscles, the steadiness of strong bones. And he would have it again, youth, he would have it before the sun rose on this quaint little town again.

    The Bible Belt proved easy pickings for the rebirthing, so many people thinking
