    Beads of sweat rolled down his face despite the suit’s attempts to regulate the internal temperature. His breaths were heavy and his throat felt as though he hadn’t drank in days. Geoff Jones crested the final hill in his path. The bluish-gray regolith crunched beneath his feet and the end of his walking rod.

    In the valley below was the complex. Or what was left of it.

    Framed in the vastness of space, Earth sat silently over the horizon, the shadow of the moon covering over a quarter of the blue and green planet. Geoff looked down at the valley before him. There was no wind to stir dust and nothing moved or crawled across the surface. Void of all vegetation, Geoff marveled at the magnificent desolation of it all.

    His chest heaved with great breaths. His throat still ached and the sweat that trailed from his forehead and armpits was cold on his skin as the suit lowered the internal temperature. He wanted to sit down, to remove the suit and take a shower. He wanted a nap.
