Preface
In my 50-year career in marketing, I've been fortunate to learn from my experiences as well as what I’ve gleaned from others through friendships, alliances, observations, and my willingness and ability to absorb and keep an open mind. Everything I’ve learned has been beneficial to my success. These experiences, along with the knowledge I’ve accrued from books, seminars, and workshops, have led me to devise a foundation to build upon and a road map to follow when I desired to blaze new trails in uncharted territory. This book is based on what I have learned. I encourage you to pick it up when you need to be stimulated, motivated, and activated. It need not be read from cover to cover.
Smart Moves: These are lessons learned
from decades of doing
and there are many more that will appear in future volumes. These lessons consist of those I learned by hands on
activity and others where the knowledge was gained through exposure to others who were much wiser than me. The idea is to shorten your learning curve by benefiting from the experiences and expertise of others. Read them all at once, or one at a time but make sure you apply them to your business. Share your Smart Moves
so others can benefit from your wisdom. Go to our website www.smartwolff.com and fill out the contribution form and we'll get in touch with you to learn what you have to offer.
Smart Thoughts: One definition of thinking is The process of applying the mind to thinking about a particular person or subject.
That is what I did with the Smart Thoughts that follow. I looked at each quotation and interpreted how I felt it might best be viewed from the perspective of a business environment. I don't mind if you disagree. In fact, I encourage you to write your own view of how this quotation might apply to you and what you are doing or wish to do.
This section will stimulate your thinking and help you benefit from the experience and thoughts of others, will motivate you when things seem to be going wrong, and will strengthen your resolve when those around are not providing the support you would expect. Most important, it will remind you that no matter how tough things get, you are in control of your destiny and that the attitude you have will determine how high you fly. You can go to www.smarttwolff.com to add any Smart Thought
you want to share to benefit others.
Smart Stories: This developed by a suggestion from my assistant, Leigh Seddon, a very smart lady. We reached out over the Internet and asked business people from the established to relatively new entrepreneurs to share their stories with us. We had an amazing response. What follows are not just smart business stories but attitudes that can only be described as smart thinking
which is why this book carries that name. These stories are told by the business owners themselves, of their challenges and successes. These are great to read if you’re in need of motivation and stimulation. Also, if you have Smart Stories
to share, go to our website www.smartwolff.com and fill out the contribution form and we'll get in touch with you.
Smart Quotes: I have always been fascinated with quotations and the ability of someone to express a very powerful thought in a minimum of words. The more succinct the more insightful the thought seems to be. People interacting with a quote on a subject of interest seem to cause a stimulation of the reader's mental process. They often are also a reinforcement of an uncommon factor in most people's lives … Commonsense.
Chapter 1
Smart Move
Two Characteristics of a Successful Leader
(It's simply common sense, which too often is uncommon)
"Every Human mind is a great slumbering power until awakened
by keen desire and by definite resolution to do." - Edgar F. Roberts
In business we are always looking for answers or solutions to problems or situations where a fresh perspective would be helpful. Consultants, advisors, and gurus are ready to jump in and help you for a fee, sometimes a very large one. Smart leaders know that the first thing these smart individuals will do is to interact directly with the people who have the clearest view of what you are doing wrong … and right. They are your employees, customers and vendors. In some situations you
