Foreword
If I had known about Pow!er Partnerships when I was first starting Laurel and Associates, Ltd. twenty-five years ago, there is no telling how much further along the company and I would be today. It would have been so useful to have had a power partner who listened to my goals and dreams, offered practical advice and suggestions, and kept me on track and moving forward. It would also have been incredibly validating to recognize that my knowledge and skills were just as useful to my partner.
It is reassuring to learn that independent sole practitioners do not have to go it alone anymore, thanks to this book. Many entrepreneurs have limited funds when they start out. They also have no desire to deal with the complexity of creating formal legal partnerships. That is why it is such a great idea to informally pair up and essentially barter our expertise for our mutual benefit.
A power partnership is such a simple and practical solution to the problem of entrepreneurs who cannot possibly have all the skills, experience and social networks that they need to be successful. What I particularly appreciate about this book is that its step-by-step approach is tempered by examples of real world successes and failures. You can tell that the writer has lived through the ups and downs of finding and working with her own power partners, and we readers benefit from her experience.
Power partnerships require people. However, people often have different personalities, goals, communication styles, and degrees of commitment. This book wisely examines the strengths and challenges of partnering and communicating with different personalities. It also makes the important point that a power partnership needs to consist of two people who have the same commitment to their businesses.
Without a shared level of commitment, power partnerships are doomed to fail. First, because it is easy to become resentful if only one person is doing all the work. Second, because a significant key to an effective power partnership is frequent meetings to set individual goals and then hold each other accountable for achieving those goals. As a workplace learning and performance consultant, I have seen firsthand how this lack of a shared commitment in a normal partnership can bring a business to its knees.
Now that I know how to create and maintain an effective power partnership, and avoid the possible pitfalls, I can see all the ways it will help me strengthen my business. As a sole practitioner, it is easy to get distracted from important business-building goals. Quite honestly, it will be wonderful to have someone in my corner who wants me to succeed, who can provide complementary business skills, and who will strongly encourage me to take the necessary steps to accomplish my goals.
As a single parent, I can also see the value of having a power partnership for my personal life!
Luckily, the author provides good resources and worksheets on her website to help us along. Whether our power partnerships are focused on our businesses or on our personal lives, the author has set us up for success. For that, I am very grateful!

Building the Skills for Your Success
Preface
Why This Book?
With today's advancing technology, shaky world economy, and massive corporate layoffs, more and more people are starting their own businesses, often working alone and from home. If you have a computer and a phone line, you can conduct business around the world from your home office, spare bedroom, basement, or garage. With WiFi and a cell phone, you don't even need a landline, just a handy coffee shop or bookstore. Today's technology makes it easy and affordable for small or micro-businesses to appear much larger than they are. This makes it possible to land accounts that small or home-based businesses in times past could only dream about! An increasing number of Americans -- and people all over the world -- are harnessing technology and starting their own, often one-person, businesses in hopes of:
* Having more fun
* Having more time for family
* Having more control of their personal and professional lives
* Having more opportunities to exercise their own values in the marketplace
* Increasing personal and professional satisfaction and growth
* Changing or saving the world!
* Having a more balanced life
* Making more money
* In short -- having more choices and more freedom!
Whatever your reason(s) for wanting to go out on your own, the trend away from huge corporations toward small business is real. Speaking from experience, however, once you've been in business for yourself for a while, the structured world of the real job
with regular paychecks, regular hours, built-in support teams, and organizational goals can begin to look pretty good. Not to mention a little gossip around the water cooler.
This book was designed to help you create a Dynamic Duo,
a team of two, a Pow!er Partnership, to give you many of the things you may miss about the world of real jobs,
without having to put up with all the baggage that made you decide to leave that world in the first place.
What Is A Dynamic Business Duo Pow!er Partnership?
A Dynamic Duo Pow!er Partnership is a new business relationship model with no legal or financial ties. This special relationship is designed to make up for all of those wonderful people who supported your success in the world of the real job.
People who cared about the quantity and the quality of the work you produced. People who sometimes irritated you to higher levels of performance than you may have thought you could achieve. People who saw the best in you when maybe you saw only lack in yourself. People who
