    Afterthoughts

    Introduction

The contents of this book are based upon personal experiences, observations, comments, thoughts, and readings about basketball and how it might be played better.

Each section contains suggestions you may consider to improve your skills and performances and to make the game more enjoyable. The information and suggestions in each section are not to be considered an exhaustive list and they are not always in order of importance.

In the event you have questions, either ask your coach or contact the author.

    A. Dribbling

Learn to dribble the ball with somewhat of a limp wrist and use your fingertips.

Many players use too much arm when dribbling.

Dribblers should extend their non-dribbling forearm somewhat away from their body in order to protect the ball. They may not want to do this when driving to the basket so that their quickness is not affected.

Players who intend to dribble and are not penetrating should dribble the ball in closer so it is harder to steal.

When dribbling in a crowd or under attack by more than one defender use a low dribble, switch hands, keep the elbow on the dribbling arm in closer to your body and the elbow should be flexible.

You generally need to see the whole floor when dribbling. You may need to hold your head up higher and possibly take a higher dribble.

Players must be able to dribble while backing up and not have the ball stolen.

On the following moves and shots, the last dribble needs to be in close: hesitation dribble, spin dribble, cross-over dribble, in and out dribble, step-back dribble, pull-up jump shot and the fade away shot.

Practice low fingertip dribbling especially while waiting to play a pick-up game.

Practice a change of speed dribble, a stop and go dribble and a hesitation dribble with both hands.

You need to have good strength in your off-hand’s wrists, fingers, arm and hand so you will be able to do all the dribble moves with your off-hand.

For a speed dribble do not use a wrist twist. The ball should dribble way out front, the hand should be to the rear and in the middle of the ball, back spin should be applied by the fingertips, when ball bounces up the hand should ride it up slightly, use plenty of wrist and fingertips.

When penetrating and you have your head low, you need to look forward and watch the feet of the cutters, teammates and defenders.
