    Historical Context

Tim O’Brien was born in 1946 in Minnesota and went on to become a very serious student. In his college years, Tim spend a lot of time protesting the Vietnam War while majoring in political science, though he did always have an interest in writing. Upon graduation from college, and just before he would begin his PhD at Harvard, O’Brien was drafted for the Vietnam war; though he did consider going to Canada to avoid the draft, he eventually decided to attend basic training.

After he was discharged O’Brien wrote and published many works, most of which revolved around his time in the service and none more popular than The Things They Carried which was not published until 1990 but was comprised of stories he had written over the years since the war. O’Brien was awarded the National Book Award for Going After Cacciato in 1979 and from that point on he was known as a brilliant writer who spoke of the war with honesty and true emotion.

The Things They Carried is a work of fiction though it includes many details from O’Brien’s personal experiences in the war, not to mention that the main character is named Tim O’Brien, though there are a few major differences between the writer and the character. He put a tremendous amount of heart and soul into the novel and even dedicated it to the characters in the book as he obviously felt a very personal connection with them. It is thought that the reason O’Brien only writes about war is not only because he knows it so well but perhaps because he cannot escape the painful memories of that time.

O’Brien was in the running for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award for The Things They Carried, and it solidified his status as a masterful writer.
