Chapter One: Introduction to camel spiders

Camel spiders are sometimes referred to as wind scorpions or sun spiders. In recent years, interest in these mysterious creatures has grown significantly, and people have become very curious about them. This is encouraged by encounters between soldiers and camel spiders in the Middle East. Many stories and myths about camel spiders have emerged and it is now hard to tell what’s true and what’s not.

Camel spiders have a bloodcurdling appearance, which has undoubtedly contributed to fears and myths about them. Possibly, the shock of a first encounter with such a being has led to wild exaggerations about their size and speed.

The reputation of camel spiders is exemplified in the 2012 horror movie that shares the same name. The movie Camel Spiders is extremely gory; the spiders gruesomely attack American troops stationed in the desert. Camel spiders are portrayed as vicious, dangerous, and a serious threat to humanity. Of course, the movie is fictional, but it does show how legendary these creatures have become.

In addition, a novel entitled The Camel Spider has recently been published. This book is not actually about camel spiders, but does name a deadly member of a terrorist group after them.

Whether they are starring in horror films or being compared to terrorists, camel spiders definitely have a bad reputation. But are they really that dangerous? In this book, we will discover the facts about camel spiders: their appearance, size, and speed, what they eat, how they hunt, and whether they are poisonous. We will examine some common myths about camel spiders, as well as real encounters. This book also includes the story of a soldier who accidentally brought a camel spider home to the United Kingdom in his luggage!

Chapter Two: What are camel spiders?

    Are they spiders or scorpions?

Many people reasonably assume that camel spiders are indeed spiders. However, others refer to camel spiders as wind scorpions. This begs the question – are they spiders or scorpions?

In actual fact, camel spiders are not spiders or scorpions! Instead, the scientific name for a camel spider is a Solifugid.

Solifugae, spiders, and scorpions are all types of Arachnids. Therefore, they do have very similar characteristics. For example, they all have eight legs. Similarities have often led to some confusion between the three.

The body of a camel spider looks very similar to that of an actual spider. It has two main parts: the cephalothorax and the opisthosoma. The former can basically be explained as the head merged with the thorax, whilst the latter is similar
