About this ebook

Two cops-- partners. They see it all: the good, the bad, and the stupid.

Pete and Jim patrol the streets, handling all sorts of calls and dealing with all sorts of people. As senior officer, Pete often takes the lead, but Jim is shaping up to be a fine cop in his own right.
Unfortunately, at the end of their shift, the officers face a situation that goes from bad to worse... resulting in the call that all law enforcement professionals hate to hear: “Officer down.”

    Main characters:

Officer Jim Earnest – Rookie, probationary officer partnered with Wry; the dark-haired Earnest is very handsome and happily married

Officer Pete Wry – Field Training Officer, responsible for molding Earnest into a good cop; although older and more experienced, the fair-haired Wry is still boyishly good-looking

I hear sirens, he thought absently. Police or ambulance...I don’t know. He’d heard there was a difference between the two, but had never tested the theory by comparing them, so he didn’t know for sure. Which was kind of crazy, considering his chosen profession.

In any case, one was as good as the other; this would all be over soon, finally—one way or the other. He knew it was important to keep pressure on the wound, but found it more and more difficult to press downward on it with any force; the best he could do was put his hand on top of the makeshift bandage. It was the loss of blood, he thought. The injury itself didn’t hurt—anymore, that is—but he must have lost a lot more blood than he’d realized, since he couldn’t seem to muster any strength; he almost felt too tired to breathe. Now he understood what it meant to ‘feel drained’... literally. If not for the quick-and-dirty bandage job... well, he didn’t want to think about that. If it weren’t for this bandage, he’d probably already be dead.

Voices. There were voices now, shouts coming from all over: some near, some far, and one very close by. That one wasn’t surprising. In fact, hearing it helped him stay calm.

Thank god. He tried to look around, see what was happening around him, but it was getting increasingly difficult to keep his eyes open, not to mention focused. No, I’m not going to give in! I’m not giving up... even if it really isn’t giving up in the big sense, the permanent sense. I just don’t want these guys to see me with my eyes closed.

He was being moved. Faces were looking down at him, three or four or five of them; probably the paramedics and even some of his own co-workers. I guess this is how a fish feels in his fishbowl. I don’t like it. He also didn’t like the flashing that fogged his vision. Were the red flashes the lights of the ambulance and police cars, or was it part of the ‘final stages’? No! That’s not gonna happen! Not while I still have breath and conscious thought. Not while there are people who need me, people who care about me.

His vision was clouded, but even so, he knew he wasn’t alone; he knew who was at his side.
