Introduction
Taipei is a bustling, vibrant city filled with delicious food that incorporates many different cuisines from all over the globe yet is still able to establish unique flavours of its own. If you know what to look for, it can be an extremely accommodating city for vegans. Because of its Buddhist influence, there are many restaurants that offer an array of vegan options. The 2008 Almanac of Food Consumption Survey in Taiwan reported that vegetarians account for about 10% of Taiwan’s population. With that said, it’s safe to state that there are thousands of vegetarian restaurants to be found on this tiny island. The restaurants that I’ve listed below are a guide and by no means the only options available. I’ve pointed out a few of my favourite spots which include some that are entirely vegan and others that have vegan options.
The restaurants that have vegan options do serve meat, so if you aren’t comfortable supporting those establishments no problem! I wanted to include options for everyone. I know that just because I’m vegan, doesn’t mean all of my friends are and while I would love to say, Let’s eat vegan tonight
to a group of 5 meat-eaters, the likelihood of them complying is slim. So instead of settling on a place that they choose where there could be an option for vegans, I’ve included a few restaurants that will please both carnivores and herbivores.
In order to guide you even further, there’s a list of common phrases for the vegan traveller with a phonetic English guide if you wish to hone your Chinese skills while traveling. It’s worth mentioning that the western term, vegan
is still fairly new and even if you do ask for something without dairy products you might still get it. I feel that because of the way vegans
eat out here, it’s often quite confusing to explain what a western vegan is, i.e. someone who doesn’t consume dairy products and eggs.
The term vegan
in this culture is one who doesn’t eat meat, but also abstains from garlic and onion. Some vegans
will eat egg, so there are a few vegetarian restaurants that do serve that. And also some of their gluten products do contain egg whites, so if you are concerned about that I would stay away from them entirely, unless it is a 100% vegan restaurant. Vegetable dishes and tofu dishes will in fact be vegan, but what is in some of their processed gluten products is not guaranteed to be pure.
Restaurants included in this guide are meant to provide options for any kind of traveller, from budget to posh. With that said, some of the restaurants aren’t glamorous but, aesthetics aside, offer great food. If you can get over the peeling paint, stained walls and dirty floors, I think you’ll be able to enjoy every aspect of Taiwanese dining. Part of travelling is abandoning your comfort zone and being able to embrace all that a city has to offer. So if that means grabbing a stool in the back of a hot, crowded restaurant where the only ambience is that of a faded, sun-stained portrait of a rice field then so be it.
Taipei is very in tune with the needs of vegans, but if you’re unsure of something and don’t feel comfortable eating it, then don’t. Even while searching for places to eat for this guide there were definitely moments of frustration when trying to explain my dietary restrictions. Some restaurants are accommodating, others aren’t. I’ve written this guide to make it as easy as possible for anyone travelling through Taiwan to get a quality meal without the hassle.
Taiwanese Cuisine
When thinking of Taiwanese food the two words that come to mind are fresh
and abundant
. Upon arriving in Taiwan I was extremely impressed by the assortment of vegetables offered at all restaurants. Veg and non-veg places all offer lots
