Introduction
Most paddlers have their own crowd of paddling buddies, and in most crowds, just one or two people plan all the trips. Maybe the others don’t have the confidence to run a paddle. It does take a lot of planning and the paddle itself, depending on the group, can sometimes be less fun for the leader who’s busy counting heads and worrying about the safety of his paddlers.
On the other hand, the leader gets to pick the location, the crowd, and the timing. Also, there is pleasure in imagining a trip and then seeing it come to fruition. Plus, if you have the right paddling buddies, they'll buy your drinks for you at the post-paddle debriefing (a.k.a., happy hour).
So what do you need to know to be a safe, effective, and fun trip leader? A leader needs to have good judgment, good technical skills, and good group management skills. This book will lay out everything you need to know to plan and execute a safe trip for any group.

Chapter 1: Before the Paddle
Before the Paddle : Make Your Trip Unique
Maybe you have a yen to see a certain river. Maybe you want to work on your eddy peels. Maybe you want to paddle further than you ever have before. Other people are sure to share your interests, so why not invite them along?
Ultimately, the first goal is to have fun. Take the time to figure out something entertaining and different. If you build a reputation for putting on interesting paddles, your trips will always be well-attended. Circumnavigations are always popular; people like to go around things because the whole paddle is new sights. Themes are fun; try to visit three lighthouses in a day, or paddle to a historical site, or paddle out to see the full moon. For those shorter after-work paddles, throw in a skills break; on a hot afternoon, rolling or rescue practices are good choices, or run a short game. If you have paddlers who you know are polishing a certain skill or getting ready for a certification, try to fit in some opportunities for them to work toward those things.
Once you have your idea, you need to plan your route. That means it's time for…
Before the Paddle: Charts
Time to break out the charts! If you don't know how to read a chart, fix that. It's easy and fun to read charts, and charts tell you everything you need to know about a paddle. The best book I've found on chart reading for paddlers is Franco Ferrero's Sea Kayak Navigation. Don't worry about the title if you're a canoeist or a SUPper -- the book is good for all paddlers. Another must-have resource is NOAA's Chart No. 1. This is a visual glossary of all the markings on charts -- and there are a lot of different markings. Unless you're a professional boat captain or a cartographer, you'll probably never learn them all. That's okay, you don't need to know them all; you just need to be able to read the ones on the chart that you're using to plan your paddle.
Download charts from NOAA. There are free trial software programs that will allow
