The Corn Maze Craze - Evie Lester
Chapter 1
This wasn’t supposed to happen. We’ve already banished one evil warlock. And turned a wicked witch into a harmless mouse. We are supposed to be safe now.
I realized I was screaming as the evil thing bore down on me.
It was a beautiful, cool, crisp day in Witch’s Cove, Massachusetts. And life almost seemed normal again. I mean, as normal as life can be if you’ve just learned that you and your brother are witches.
Well, I’m a witch. Katie Siwell. That’s me. Twelve years old. Seventh grader. Normal everyday kind of girl from California until my parents decided to move us to the creepy town of Witch’s Cove where I learned I am descended from a long line of witches.
Kyle, my brother, is a warlock. He’s my twin, but we seem nothing alike. I look like my mother. She’s blond with blue eyes. And she has a sunny disposition, usually. Kyle looks like my dad who is dark with long, scraggly black bangs that fall into his eyes. His eyes are deep, dark brown--like a bashful puppy.
But the biggest difference between Kyle and me is that he loves being a warlock. He loves anything that’s scary.
But I hate being a witch.
So far, I’ve been chased by an evil warlock who wanted to kill my brother and me. And our home, the Witch’s Cove Inn, was nearly destroyed by a wicked witch who attacked us. Being a witch is dangerous!
That’s why I’m in this situation. Because being a witch is very dangerous. And they are out to get us!
Who are they, you ask? Who’s trying to kill me now and why?
It all started this morning.
Chapter 2
It was a regular school day in early November. Our class was going on a field trip to a local farm--Hadley’s Happy Hills Farm.
I was excited. Growing up in Los Angeles, we didn’t get to see any farms. At least not the real ones. There was an amusement park called Knott’s Berry Farm. And it was totally cool. But it wasn’t a real farm.
We were going to Hadley’s Happy Hills Farm to see the farm animals and sample the vegetables and cheeses. Mostly, were supposed to learn about how complicated it was to run a farm. But us kids, we just wanted to have fun.
Courtney Porter wanted to milk a cow. As if! I didn’t think she’d go anywhere near a real cow.
And Charlie Crandall wanted to drive a tractor.
Some girls were saying they wanted to buy cheese. And some of the boys were hopping around and clucking like chickens.
Paisley Adams was standing with her arms crossed looking cross, as usual. I don’t think Paisley Adams wanted to do anything on a farm. Ever.
Maryellen Sanders and I wanted to go on a hayride. Now that Halloween was over, the Haunted Hayrides were over. Now, the hayrides were just plain, old tours of the farm, except you get to ride around on the back of a wagon loaded with hay.
It sounded lovely. And peaceful.
Kyle and his friends, Declan Ingersoll and Brody Smythe, who also happened to be warlocks, wanted to do the maze.
It was haunted too. By actors dressed as zombies, goblins, vampires and, yes, witches. And the entrance was guarded by the biggest, scariest scarecrow I’ve ever seen. The actors are all gone now that Halloween is over, but the scarecrow was still there.
He is always there. Along with other scarecrows hanging on poles high above the corn scattered throughout the maze. You see, the maze is cut out of a cornfield. And the scarecrows guard the corn from the crows.
They are not real. They are old flannel shirts and denim overalls stuffed with straw, topped with an old flop hat. They do not live. They do not come to life and try to kill people. Not even in Witch’s Cove.
Something, or someone, was behind this. Someone evil. Truly evil.
But who could it be? We had already banished the most evil witch our town had ever known. And we had already turned his evil assistant into a little gray mouse.
So now, with this happening now...
There could only be one explanation.
Chapter 3
I will start my story at the beginning. 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. Kyle was running after Declan who had something in his hand. Brody, as usual, was reluctantly bringing up the rear.
Hey, give that back,
Kyle shouted. It could be really dangerous.
Not on your life,
screamed Declan, laughing with maniacal laughter.
What is it Kyle?
Brody called after the two of them. What’s Declan done now?
Declan made a fast U-turn, barely missing as Kyle reached out to grab at his arm. Too slow. You can’t catch me. I’M SUPER-DECLAN!
Declan was screaming at the top of his lungs. That finally got the attention of our teacher, Miss Farraway.
DECLAN INGERSOLL! YOU STOP THAT RUNNING AT ONCE. DO YOU HEAR ME?
She was screaming, but Declan wasn’t stopping.
He cut though a group of girls which included Paisley Adams, Courtney Porter and Abigail Rocker. They scattered like bowling pins and screeching like banshees.
Then he headed straight for us. Maryellen and I were standing in line waiting for the stragglers to get in line so that they could all start boarding the bus.
Maryellen started screaming. I didn’t scream until I saw him raise his hand and aim right at me. Then I was screaming louder than anyone.
The black thing went flying through the air and sailed directly at me. I didn’t have time to reach. I was paralyzed with fear. Who knew what Declan could be throwing at me? He was a warlock. A young, untrained warlock. And a jerk. He had been known to use magic even though he didn’t really know what he was doing. He could be dangerous. Who knew what kind of spell he might be flinging at me.
I had already
