Links to Understanding: A Guidebook for Professionals Working with Aging People
()
About this ebook
This book presents to the professional specialist the realities of the workplace, integrating our theoretical understanding of gerontological issues with practical applications in the format of a handbook, or guide, to be used by those working as counselors, therapists, chaplains, attorneys, etc. who practice within the aging community. My perspective is holistic, interweaving aspects of widely-held concepts of human and spiritual development with elements synthesized from other disciplines. Current research and publications are referenced for clarity and as suggestions for further study. While the field of gerontology continues to grow exponentially, all of this guide's content is designed to be relevant, helpful and inspiring now.

Acknowledgments
With gratitude and love, I wish to acknowledge the following, (almost) in order of appearance in my life:
Kathleen Gurbin, my mother, a wise, kind and devout woman who navigated the choppy waters of life and taught me how. She keeps me in her prayers to this day, bless her.
Virginia West, my role model and dear friend for over fifty years, who began as a co-worker and became my boss when our firm moved me to Minneapolis all those years ago. Her belief in me, her support, guidance, and wise counsel motivated and inspired me, then and now.
Dr. Justus E. Olson, who was a pioneer in the human potential movement. As an affiliate of National Training Laboratories, J
originated the Koinonia Human Relations Training program, an outreach ministry, in the Minneapolis area. His teaching and guidance changed my life, and his legacy of honoring the human spirit continues to change the world, one person at a time.
Ann Meissner, PhD, an esteemed, innovative educator and Master therapist much-honored by her peers, who has in recent years become a recognized expert on human development. She was instrumental in introducing the ninth stage of adult development, gerotranscendence, after studying the theory with Lars Tornstam, its originator. Down-to-earth, calm and wise, Ann is a cherished and indispensable friend of over forty years who evokes the best in me, and whose healing presence lights my way.
Dr. Aubrey Daniels, a globally respected business consultant who is a pioneer in the development of applied behavioral science in the education and business arenas. His guidance in applying human potential principles for motivation and productivity to the workplace, while maintaining the highest professional standards, has been key to the success of all my business enterprises. I deeply value the wisdom he has brought to my life as
