CHAPTER 1

Meredith Ramsey stared wordlessly at her grandmother with her mouth hanging open in a very unladylike manner.

Excuse me? Meredith ran her hand through her long dark hair and tried to still her rapidly beating heart. There was no way this was happening.

Dear, the winery has been mismanaged by that scapegrace son of mine for the past decade. Gregory and his slut of a wife have practically single-handedly ruined this family treasure.

The scapegrace her grandmother was talking about was Meredith’s Uncle Gregory. To be fair, Meredith didn’t have a great relationship with her uncle; the man was all flash and, to her mind, zero substance. But who was she to judge? The few memories she had of her uncle were of the overpowering cologne he wore and his ability to snap gum—something Meredith had tried to learn but could never seem to grasp. But to hear her sweet Grams call the woman he’d married as a slut left Meredith a little off balance.

How is that possible, Grams? I thought there was a trust in place or some kind of protection for the winery.

No, dear. There wasn’t. Today my meeting with the accountant illuminated the mess my son left us and let me assure you, our situation is critical. If we don’t turn things around we will have to close at the end of the season. She picked up a glass of wine and took a sip. Gregory and the witch he married packed up and moved to God knows where and said nothing about the trouble we were in.

Meredith dropped down into the desk chair and placed her elbows on the rich and shiny cherry wood finish. She rested her head in her hands while squeezing her eyes tightly closed. She’d come out to California from Wisconsin to help out for the summer, not stay and save the floundering business. Gram, I know nothing about running a winery. Zero, zip, zilch, bupkis, nada.

Oh, Meredith, I’m sure you know more than you think. One can’t grow up around the vines and not learn something.

Meredith cocked a brow at this statement. Okay, fine I know the grapes are touchy, they are temperamental and this is no doubt due to the fact they’re French grapes. In truth she knew that grapes weren’t going to be volatile due to the origins of the plant but that was neither here nor there. The fact remained she
