    Chapter One: Introduction

The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow was first published in the year 1953. It was published by Viking Press.

The story revolves around the title character Augie March, who carries eponymous name.

Augie grows up during the Great Depression. The novel The Adventures of Augie March is a perfect example of Bildungsroman. The novel traces the progress and development of an individual character through a series of encounters, professions and relationships from childhood to adulthood.

The book was the winner of the 1954 U. S. National Book Award for Fiction. It was also listed among one of the hundred best novels both by Time Magazine and the Modern Library Board.

The novel very clearly depicts the Chicago of the author’s childhood as well as clearly establishes a new voice through Augie March.

Augie March happens to be the narrator of the novel. His narration happens to be free from personal realization, and it deals with vast social issues, places, and characters.

While suppressing the facts from the reader, the free style voice of the narrator gives an autobiographical touch to the story.

    Chapter Two: Plot Summary

The story of the novel moves along the growth of Augie March to his mature and stable state. Augie, Simon, and George are brothers. They have no father and they are brought up by their mother.

George happens to be mentally abnormal. Their mother is losing her eyesight. They have a tyrannical grandmother-like boarder in the house. They live in very humble circumstances in the rough areas of Chicago.

Augie goes through several changes and experiences. He moves in a free-wheeling manor among jobs, women, homes, education, and lifestyle.

Augie March makes most of his path by himself and it seems partly to come around through chance or circumstances.

He is nearly adopted by a wealthy couple who spoil him and then there is a struggle for existence. He steals books and helps out his friends in desperate straits.

Several adventures in his life complete his story. The most unusual of his adventures is his flight to Mexico with Thea. She happens to be wild and irrepressible. She has an eagle and she tries to catch lizards
