Martin Martinez

Dealing with adversity, uncertainty and change are common traits ingrained in most successful entrepreneurs, qualities Martin learnt before the age of 14. By this stage in his life Martin had moved a total of 12 times in 2 continents and attended 7 different schools. A few years after arriving in Australia with less then $3,000 and a suitcase, Martin completed his High School certificate before pursuing a career in corporate Australia. Like any entrepreneur he quickly realised that working for someone else wasn’t for him and shortly after he left to help his parents manage a dwindling French Patisserie Business which he helped turn around within a space of a couple of months. With this new found passion, Martin’s next challenge wasn’t what business to start but where to get the money to start it. So he decided to return back to the corporate world by getting a job at Star City Casino. He quickly moved up the corporate ladder and within a couple of years he was asked to be involved in the installation of poker on the casino floor as part of the Casino’s latest license acquisition to host poker games. This opportunity gave him great insight about poker as a business as well as the global popularity and growth. In 2005 he went on to launch: Australian Poker League and after 3 years of hard work, determination and persistence he grew the company to become the world’s largest poker franchise with over 120 territories in two countries, whilst generating combined revenue north of $50M per annum. After successfully exiting the business in 2011, Martin now spends majority of his time investing in new start-ups and mentoring entrepreneurs.

Dedication

My main thanks for helping me to produce my first book are to my parents. If it wasn’t for them I would never have been able to come to Australia to begin with and access the many opportunities this country has to offer.

My thanks also go out to my wife Michelle, who allowed me not only to marry her, but given me a wonderful new baby Oscar, whilst always believing in me. It is great to enjoy my life with her and our growing family and I’m a better person for having her in my life.

Lastly, I want to thank the many people I’ve come in contact with over the years in business, which have taught me everything I know by way of experience in the School of Hard Knocks.

I hope that you enjoy this read and ask you to share it with your family and friends if you find the content valuable.

It may come to you as a surprise, but the most difficult question I had to answer when writing this book was whether or not to charge for the it.

As I reached out to publishers and other successful authors, I found they were quite divided in their opinion and weren’t able to guide me in
