This book is different from any book about dreams you’ve ever read.
It won’t tell you how your dreams can win the lottery.
This book won’t teach you how to use your dreams to meet the love of your life, salvage a failing relationship or make your boss give you a raise.
When you’ve finished reading it, you won’t be able to predict the future or have a relationship with God that’s any closer than the one you have now.
However, you will know more about why you dream and how dreaming can benefit you.
Dreams are important.
Since ancient times, dreams have played a prominent role in literature, music, art, philosophy and religion.
All human beings – except for a very small number of people with severe brain damage – dream.
It’s likely that our pets dream. They experience the brain states associated with dreaming, and they certainly look like they dream.
Scientists are creating ways to look at the dream images created by our brains. Perhaps one day we will be able to see our pets’ dreams and others will be able to see our dreams.
This is a book about the science of dreams – what scientists know about how and why we dream.

A dream is more than that. It’s more than music, noises, flashing lights, bright colors or sweet-scented perfumes.
It’s a story you tell yourself when you’re asleep.
Yes, dreams are stories.
When people share dreams – when Australian aborigines take part in a dream sharing and when your sister tells her latest dream to her best friend – they are telling stories.
What is a story? It’s a series of events connected in some way. The connection
