About this ebook

Becoming a yogi is probably a good example for any role of life, except the criminal, but the parallels with becoming a painter are particularly fun. Yoga, literally ‘union with God’ actually makes any endeavor better but then so does art. The craving for "newness" is in all of us. Usefulness is the most basic urge. "Knowing Is Loving" is about treating life in an honest way to achieve harmony.

    Preface

Yoga Sutra, by Patanjali, also known as Raja Yoga or king yoga, is the source of Classical Yoga. Patanjali lived sometime between 200 B.C. and 200 A.D. He was a brilliant and kind man who saw a service he could perform and did it admirably. He mentions friendliness as a way to overcome negative tendencies in oneself. It seems wise as that leads to co-operation which is the central theme in a viable society. He wrote in short aphorisms or statements almost like a teacher’s outline for a lecture. Many translations with commentary have been written over the centuries and they vary widely from the poetic to the scholarly and from the mystical to the practical. Some are available on the internet. I have added a reference to the pertinent aphorisms in parenthesis for anyone wishing to research these ideas.

In Western Art the tradition of painting to depict the natural world evolved over many generations. It culminated in Impressionism. One aspect of art is the evolution of vision in the human race. My Impressionist teacher, Henry Hensche, began painting before Monet died. He lived to improve his vision and teach others what he had learned from his teacher, Charles Hawthorne, and his long life as an artist.

What I hope to show are some of the things art and yoga have in common. I believe they share a lot of the same practices; the search for a meaningful life, truth, and a practical way to evolve.

The ultimate goal of Raja Yoga is to stop thought without going to sleep. (I, 2) Why that is important becomes apparent after you can do it. Without thought no world exists in the mind. When
