Chronic Ankle Instability – A Love Story
It was March of 1982 and I had been dating my future wife for about 6 months when we moved in with one another. We were enjoying each other’s company immensely, partying with our friends and trying to make our meager livings. I was working as a mechanic and she was waiting tables at a sports bar, although they weren’t really called that back then.
Heart was Lisa’s favorite band so I took her to the concert to celebrate her 20th birthday. We went with another couple, it was her friend Nicole and her boyfriend at the time I don’t recall his name. We went out to dinner beforehand and got stoned before we got out of the car to go into the coliseum. The girls both looked hot, I remember Lisa was wearing high heels and a pair of green kneepants. We were all laughing and enjoying life as we entered the coliseum.
It was a general admission show meaning there was no assigned seating. As we walked up the steps of the coliseum looking for a seat I walked behind Lisa as she walked behind Nicole and her boyfriend.
As we walked up the stairs the crowd slowed up and Lisa kind of bumped into Nicole’s back. As this happened she lost her balance and fell backward towards me. Off balance she tried to catch herself on the step below her. She landed awkwardly in her high heel and her foot rolled completely under. She fell into my arms and I caught her from falling down the steps.
Honey, are you ok?
I asked her as I saw her grimacing deeply. It’s my foot
she said as I held her in my arms. Nicole and her boyfriend looked back down and realized Lisa was having a problem.
Can you stand on it?
I ask as I hold her. I …I don’t know
she hesitated. I set her down on her good foot and she put a little weight on her injured foot. Ohhhhh, that doesn’t feel good at all
she says with a wince. I pick her up and carry her up three rows and set her in an empty seat.
Let’s just sit here, Lisa hurt her foot
I explained to Nicole and her boyfriend. Lisa is sitting holding her ankle. Let me look at it honey
I said to her. She gently set the painful ankle on my lap. I worked at getting her high heel off. Maybe we should get you down to the first aid station
I suggested. I don’t want to miss the concert though, it will be ok if I just sit here
.
Nicole went down to a concession stand and got Lisa an icepack. I held it on her ankle as she rested it in my lap. We sat like that throughout the concert. I could tell by her quite demeanor that Lisa was in a lot of pain. I felt so bad for her being in so much pain when she had been so looking forward to the concert, to say nothing about it being her birthday.
After the concert we waited for the crowd to thin out to leave so the crowd wouldn’t be a factor. As we headed down the stairs Lisa leaned heavily on me. Once we go outside the seating area Nicole got under her other arm and the 2 of us supported her out of the coliseum.
We went home that night and I helped, basically carried her up the stairs to our apartment. I wanted to take her to the hospital but she insisted she would be better in the morning and if she wasn’t she would let me take her then.
Well Saturday morning had me waking to Lisa in tears and agreeing she needed to go to the ER. Her ankle was about 3 times its normal size and now had horrible bruising showing.
We left the Emergency Room with a diagnosis of a bad sprain and felt relieved that it wasn’t broken. It would be years later before we would figure out the ramifications of that fall. Lisa’s swollen foot was wrapped in an ace bandage and she was on wooden crutches. She had orders to stay off her ankle for 2 weeks and to let pain dictate when she could go back to work.
This was a turning point in our relationship as I came to realize in the coming weeks how much I loved Lisa and how much I wanted to take care of her. I took great care of her making all her meals for her and waiting on her hand and foot so she could stay off the injured foot.
I played nursemaid to her also and enjoyed it immensely. I had always enjoyed women’s feet but had kept my foot fetish as a secret. I would ice her ankle for her and rewrap her ankle multiple times a day. Once the swelling began to reduce and the acute pain backed off I would give her ankle massages twice a day. It suddenly dawned on me how much I was enjoying this.
Lisa’s 2 weeks sentence passed uneventfully enough. Two weeks to the day from her sprain she decided to put the crutches down with the idea of going back to work the following Monday. I have to admit I had my doubts as the ankle was still very swollen but Lisa was anxious to get rid of the crutches and get back to work.
She spent that weekend trying to walk on the ankle. It was still too swollen to fit a shoe on so the best she could do was getting a slipper on it. I became alarmed at the fact that it swelled every time she walked on it. We iced it quit often and that helped with the swelling but as soon as she walked on it would swell again.
