Chapter 1 - Acquiring the Power

Goal! shouted the referee. David spread his arms like wings, wagging them from side to side. He and flew back to his teammates. Yo, Little Dude, shouted Jack, Great shooting! as he high-fived his little friend. At 11 years old, David was the youngest and smallest on his soccer team. It was very tough to score on goalies literally twice his age and weight. David still did it after dribbling past defenders varying in age from 12 to 14.

It was a hot summer day. Heat radiated from nearby row houses onto the inner city soccer pitch as the two teams played soccer. Boy is it hot! David said as he wiped the sweat from his face. It must be a hundred degrees. David was dripping with sweat. His cheeks were bright pink, contrasting sharply with his bright laughing blue eyes. His light brown hair stood up in all directions. At 65 pounds and 50 inches David did not intimidate anyone over 8 years old.

David went into the goal to kick out the soccer ball. A strange thunderstorm moved in quickly. The sky turned bright green. Two bolts of lightning came without warning. One struck a nearby town house converted into a gymnastics gym. The other struck the goal next to David. The moisture in the ground suddenly expanded as it vaporized resulting in an explosion that threw David up into the air. The metal goal and wet net glowed bright red forming a cage around David. This let the massive blinding white electricity surged all around David. David’s body was suspended in mid-air for several seconds by the electricity engulfing him and the goal. The entire soccer field was bathed in red and purple cloud.

Fortunately, no one else was near the goal. The dazzling electric cage surrounding David left as suddenly as it came. David’s limp body fell gently to the ground. Jack ran up to David. Little Dude, are you ok? he asked. David’s bright blue eyes opened slowly. I, I guess I am, David slowly said. The world was spinning around David. He could hear the birds chirping, the bees buzzing and Jack breathing. David thought he could hear the sweat dripping down Jack’s face. No, I must be crazy, no one could hear that, David thought.

David, his coach gasped as he ran towards David, how do you feel? David shook his head and said, Fine, really. David stood up as Coach Jacob reached him. Really, I am ok, David said convincingly. In fact, I feel great. As good as you feel, please sit by the trainer for awhile, Coach Jacob said shaking his head, I cannot believe what just happened. You must be the luckiest boy alive.

David walked up the hill to the bleachers. Squish squash, David scrunched up his nose. Why are my footsteps so loud? he thought. Or, for that matter, why can I hear so much? The guys are breathing real hard. Why can I hear that? The trainer met him half way and sat David down on the cool metal bleachers. David hopped up and grabbed his purple Gatorade. He drank the rest of it in a flash. After joking with his trainer about just eating French-Fries and salt for lunch – with his favorite (and only) vegetable, Ketchup, for a few minutes, the trainer let David go back to the playing field.

There were only 30 seconds of play left when David took to the field. Isn’t it strange, little Dude, said Joe, "there isn’t a cloud left in the sky. With you being hit
