About The Author
Why I Wrote This
When I was a youngster, I spent many hours wandering in the woods, learning how to camp and started to work on various primitive skills. I remember getting a book that showed how to make the Wood Bow Fire Drill and I eagerly made all the parts to it and then followed the brief (but wrong!) instructions.
I struggled and struggled and eventually gave up. It wasn’t for my lack of trying that I failed, it was the instructions and diagrams in the survival book were just wrong! It was clear the author never made one and was only passing along info that was given to him without him checking to make it was worked

One of the diagrams showed the fireboard placed on a picnic table and nothing was holding it down and when the Wood Bow was used to start spinning the Spindle, well, this caused the whole fireboard to swing around widely and never had a chance to produce a coal. The survival book also left out the crucial end part, what to look for, how to know when you did get a coal and what to do with it.
I went back to my flint & steel for a few years, until I started to fiddle around with the Hand Drill, and then eventually got my first coal. As soon as I got through the entire process with the Hand Drill, I then understood what was wrong with the instructions I had been following for the Wood Bow Fire Drill and then grab my old kit that I had made a few years back, made a few adjustments adjusted my
