    Introduction (return to Contents)

This pillar is dedicated to the two most important and interrelated yet least spoken subjects that cause suffering for both genders. These two subjects are: (1) the ultimate gynaecological disorders for woman and sexual disorders for men, and (2) the lack of the right understanding of the Tao of Intimacy. These subjects are discussed together in this pillar because the Tao of Intimacy, or lack of it, is often a contributing factor to gynaecologyical and andrological disorders. This means that the right practice of the Tao of Intimacy can cure some of the disorders facing women and men. In circumstances where the cause of symptoms for women or men is not directly related to the Tao of Intimacy or lack of it, the right understanding and right practice of the Tao can be a part of the solution. For those who are not suffering from any reproductive or sexual disorder, the practice of the Tao can prevent some of these disorders from occurring.

The Ultimate Gynaecological Reality (return to Contents)

The depth of the female reality is more complicated than the male-founded, male-dominated, commercially-motivated and pharmaceutically-guided modern medicine, including gynaecology. Most of the assumptions and claims made by advocates of modern gynaecology are either too shallow or incorrect. To us, it is like floating on top of the deep ocean claiming we know what is happening on the ocean floor. That is why, at least in part, so many women in recent years have been victims of false diagnoses and unnecessary and often hazardous surgeries or medications. We will have more detailed explanation of gynaecology according to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other Eastern traditions in one of our upcoming books, Zen Kiatsu-Tao TCM. Here, in this pillar, we provide our readers with some knowledge and techniques for better understanding, prevention and cure of some of the gynaecological threats which are particularly related to intimacy, or lack of it.

Anatomically speaking, the female reproductive system is gifted with a uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, a vagina, and breasts. Physiologically speaking, she is characterized by menstruation, pregnancy, birthing, lactation, and vaginal discharges. Pathologically speaking, the diseases of the female are innumerable.

    Uterine Disorders (return to Contents)

The uterus is located at the lower energy centre in the lower abdomen between the rectum and the bladder. It is connected to ovaries on either side by fallopian tubes; therefore, the uterine system includes the uterus as well as the ovaries and fallopian tubes. The uterine system is connected to the kidney system by a group of vessels called Bao Mai in TCM and to the heart by the penetrating vessel. The main functions of the uterine system are menstruation and pregnancy, both of which are heavily dependent upon the three substances of energy, blood and body fluids.

On average, a female in a dominantly hot climate starts her regular monthly period between the ages of 12 – 14 while those who live in a dominantly cold climate begin menstruating between 14 – 16 years of age. The age of onset also varies among individuals based on their constitution. Once menstruation starts, it ideally continues on a regular basis, but it is not guaranteed. In some females, their second menstruation may not appear until six weeks, three months or even longer after their first one. In a healthy female, the menstrual cycle lasts anywhere from 24 – 30 days, but in some individuals it may be delayed or appear earlier. Menopause typically occurs between the ages of 49 – 66.

    Pathology

In order for a woman to secure the normal functional activities of the uterine system, she should maintain a healthy lifestyle. The proper lifestyle ensures that her body is blessed with a sufficient amount of energy, blood and body fluids, which the uterine system (in fact, the reproductive system as a whole) relies upon. According to TCM, the body’s nutritional fluid is the mother of blood, blood is the mother of energy, and energy is the commander of both blood and body fluids; therefore, all three substances need to be sufficient in terms of quality and quantity for any organ, the uterus included, to function properly. If the uterine system is not blessed with sufficient amounts of these substances, the functions of the uterus are affected with serious syndromes and complications, such as amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, miscarriage and infertility. Other uterine
