    Introduction

    It is generally believed that children represent innocence, having pure hearts that are free of wrong-doing and ill-willed intentions. The family home symbolizes a secure place, where family members feel peace and tranquility and can take comfort among the people they love most.

    What goes wrong in the lives and minds of innocent children who grow up to become teenage killers? Each family is of course different, and the reasons that cause families to dysfunction are varied and not always apparent to outsiders. As we look at some of the cases in this book, you will see that often times there are no warning signs that a teenager is troubled, not even to their own family. The parents of most of these children probably never imagined their children were capable of killing.

    What causes a child to kill one or both parents? The reasons are as varied as the children or teenagers themselves. The killing of one's father is known as patricide, while the killing of one's mother is called matricide. Killing of both parents is deemed parricide.

    Parricide has existed since the dawn of man, for one reason or another. Very few of us can truly understand what propels a person to kill his mother or father, except, of course in situations of extreme abuse or self-defense.

    One of the first writings of such an instance was a young Greek man of noble birth who murdered his mother after the Trojan War. Why? Because he thought she had dishonored the family and that she had not only committed adultery, but also killed her husband. His accusers ultimately set the young man free.

    Let us not forget the story of Oedipus, a play written in Greek times about the young king who killed his father so that he could marry his mother.

    Instances of parricide recorded in ancient Greece offer proof that parricide is nothing new. Indeed, parricide is mentioned in the writings of many famous authors throughout history, from Dostoyevsky to Shakespeare. One of the most famous cases of parricide of all times occurred in a relatively peaceful and quiet town of Fall River, Massachusetts in 1892. Nearly everyone has heard the story of Lizzie Borden.

    One of the most 'modern' and notorious cases of parricide occurred in 1989 with the Menendez brothers; Lyle and Erik, who killed their parents because of the way their father treated them - and because they wanted their inheritance - sooner rather than later.

    The reasons children give for killing their parents and their violent behavior is varied. They kill for money, out of frustration, or, surprisingly enough, because they have been grounded. Some don't think their parents have been fair to them, are too hard on them, or don't care about them. In some cases, the children have been victims of abuse in one way or another and feel there is no other
