      Introduction

      This book is about the life of Elijah, one of the greatest prophets that ever lived. We are introduced to him abruptly in Scripture during the reign of king Ahab and the wicked queen Jezebel in the 9th century BC. Most of Israel had turned away from the Lord and was serving the false god Baal. Though this is a story of Elijah, it is also the chronicle of a great confrontation between the Lord God who is alive and the false god Baal who is lifeless and without any power.

      We will follow Elijah on his journey as he sets himself against the wickedness of his day in total surrender to the Lord, serving in absolute faith, loyalty, obedience, and trust even in the face of all obstacles. From his hiding for several years during a drought as instructed by God, to his astonishing triumph over the prophets of Baal, we will discover a man who sacrifices self and exhibits miraculous deeds in the name of the Lord. He is the prophet who stands before the living God as his representative to a rebellious Israel.

      In addition, this book will discuss the relationship between Elijah and John the Baptist, explore his participation in the Transfiguration, and expound his future role as one of the two prophets that will be active on the earth during the reign of the Antichrist. We will seek to perceive all we can about this great prophet from the pages of Scripture, which includes analyzing his personality and characteristics that give us insight to who Elijah really was as a person.

      When I provide distance in miles from one location to another, it is important to understand that this is only approximate since there are often differences of opinion among commentators and scholars on the exact mileage. They are provided only to give you a general idea of the time and/or distance involved in what is being discussed. The same goes for the amount of years that have passed from one event to the next.

      As we join Elijah on his hardship and triumphs, we will take into our soul the wonders, the lessons, the encouragement, and the warnings found in this story. Hopefully, his life will inspire us to also give up all so that we will follow the Lord with all of our heart, mind and soul as did Elijah. He is a great example of how God can use a man of faith who humbles himself through genuine self-sacrifice.
