They didn’t even realize they were looking in the same direction.
The windows were too thick for words. They couldn’t be opened and it wouldn’t be right to break them. But eye contact can pass through windows instantly. They could have seen each other for the first time that night, but both of them were too sad, too lost, and too absorbed in their own thoughts to look for each other.
Emma Turrell sat in a dingy Greyhound bus trying not to let her knees touch the seat in front of her. She guarded her purse with both hands and looked at the Chicago skyscrapers around her, lit brightly but dull. All she could think about was the mistake she’d made by coming to the city. She’d dreamed that her trip would bring adventure, but when she’d found it, she didn’t know if she wanted it anymore. The bus ride was long and the air conditioner was broken, so she listened to the hum of the engine and felt herself sweat.
Only a few feet away in traffic, sitting behind the untinted windows of a large SUV, Paul Thatcher had a pageboy cap pulled down so far it almost covered his eyes. He sulked in the passenger seat while his assistant, Zach, navigated the Chicago traffic. If he’d looked up, he would have noticed the crowds recognizing him from the sidewalk, pointing their cell phones in his direction and screaming his name. He couldn’t hide from them no matter how far he pulled down his hat, but he was too distracted to look up. And he was too distracted to look to his right, at the Greyhound bus with a clear window, where a girl named Emma sat with her purse on her knees, just missing his eyes.
They could have broken through two sturdy windows with nothing more than a glance. But neither of them looked in the direction of the other person. Paul was going to the airport after a day of film tests and meetings, and Emma was beginning a long bus ride back to Western Illinois. Their destinations were as different as the vehicles they traveled in.
