Preface
Many candidates like to read model answers when they are preparing for the IELTS speaking and writing modules. This book provides one model answer for each of the following 101 part 2 topics that have appeared in the IELTS speaking module.
The model answers are intended as a guide and candidates should modify the answers to suit their own circumstances and add to them wherever appropriate. In other words, candidates should consider using the vocabulary and grammatical structures in this book to help them to create their own answers.
The model answers have been grouped according to broad topic area.
The opinions expressed in the model answers in this series are not necessarily those of the author.
Friends and Family
1. Describe a member of your family.
You should say:
what the relationship is between you and him/her
how much time you spend with this person
whether you think you have similar or different personalities
and explain why you chose to talk about that person.
I'd like to talk about my brother. He's three years older than me. He's a little shorter than me, but much more muscular. Like me, he has very short hair. His hobbies are making model aircraft, playing pool and cooking. The latter two are also hobbies of mine, so we sometimes do those activities together. For example, in summer we love to prepare a barbecue at his home or at mine for our friends and family. We spend a lot of our free time together, but both of us have to travel a lot because of work, so we sometimes don't see each other for weeks. He works as an engineer in the oil industry, so he earns a pretty good salary. I think that we have similar personalities, but he is much more outgoing than I am. He is also very good at remembering jokes, which I am not.
2. Describe a family (not your own family).
You should say:
who the members of the family are
how you know them
what each person in this family does
and explain how you feel about this family.
I’d like to talk about my neighbours. There are three of them in the family, which is fairly typical in a Chinese city. The father works as an accountant for a foreign company, but I don’t know the name of it. He dresses very smartly and clearly takes care of his appearance. It’s the same with the mother. She works part-time as a hairdresser. She works part-time because she likes to take their daughter to school and pick her up in the afternoon. The daughter is seven years old and, like most kids of that age, is really cute. She’s very polite and always addresses people correctly. She loves running around and is particularly fond of dogs. She just runs up to them and starts playing with them. It makes me a little nervous to see this, but the dogs love her. They’ve lived next door to us for the last three years and I hope they’ll stay for many more.
3. Describe a school friend who you remember well.
You should say:
what he/she looked (looks) like
where you first met
how you became friends
what you did together and had in common.
I’d like to talk about my classmate, Wang Wei. We went to secondary school together for four years. He was quite tall and slim, with short black hair. He dressed a little scruffily. Although we were in the same class, I didn’t speak to him for several weeks. Later, we both joined the athletics team and that’s when we first spoke to each other. He was a very fast runner and excelled at the sprints. He was the fastest boy at school at that time. He was also quite good at the long jump. Later, we discovered that we both had the same tastes in music and films, so often talked about those things together. After we finished secondary school, we never saw each other again. He went to a different university in a different city and we never kept in touch.
4. Describe one of your classmates.
You should say:
who the classmate is/was and how you met them
what the classmate is/was like
whether you had a good relationship
and say whether other people in your class have/had a similar opinion of this person.
I would like to describe a classmate of mine from my primary school. We met on the first day of our primary school lives and we got on well from the beginning. He was a little shorter than me and stockier. He had wild red hair and pale skin with freckles. He was a bit of a trouble-maker – not a bad boy, but teachers soon learnt to beware of his practical jokes. He was quite a good student, but he got bored easily and then his pranks began. We sat next to each other in class, played together during breaks and often met each other outside school. I think that most of our classmates shared my opinion of him. He was a popular boy. We're still in touch today, even though our lives have taken completely different paths.
People of Different Ages
5. Describe a child you know or knew.
You should say:
who the child is/was
whether
